To celebrate, Ralph Lauren is debuting a Hamptons-inspired menu for the season at The Polo Bar (New York), RL Restaurant (Chicago), Ralph’s (Paris) and Ralph’s Bar (Milan) featuring dishes and cocktails inspired by the cookbook. Highlights include a watermelon and arugula salad with feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, jalapeño, mint and sherry vinaigrette and a shrimp and scallop burger with avocado and mango salad on a bed of greens. The Hamptons is the brand’s first location outside New York City (SoHo and the Upper East Side). “We looked at several places around America and East Hampton won by far,” says Alex Drexler. “It’s a great demographic who loves fashion.” The store features white-washed walls and raw muslin tenting, natural floor coverings and raw wood fixtures that will make the space feel like an extension of the beach. Men’s and women’s clothing and accessories are on offer as are one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.

We spoke with Alex Drexler about the brand, the new store and what’s to come.

Twelve years later, what has been the secret to your success?

Since the beginning we’ve always stayed focus and consistent in what we believe in. For example, one of our mottos is “Wake up. Get dressed. Don’t overthink it.” We want to make it effortless for our customer and we’ve tried to stay true to this motto since the beginning. However, it’s important not to stay static so we’re constantly working to evolve as we grow.

How has the brand evolved?

Alex Mill started in 2012 as a men’s shirt brand.  We had a small store on Elizabeth Street and did some wholesale. Since then, we’ve evolved a tremendous amount. We now have a full men’s and women’s collection and accessories. We also recently launched denim.

Is brick and mortar retail important to the brand?

Brick-and-mortar is a critical place for us to interact with our customers.  The customer can look at and touch the product firsthand and speak with our team in the store. What’s great is we can receive immediate feedback on the collection and new offerings. We always love to hear what the customer thinks and wants so it’s great in that sense. We started the company with one small store on Elizabeth Street.  Today, we have two stores in Manhattan (SoHo and the Upper East Side) and one in East Hampton. We’re excited to continue to open stores and grow.

You hosted a pop-up at SoulCycle‘s Barn earlier this summer. What’s special about this new location?

The Soul Cycle pop-up was a huge success and it validated to us the demand we had in the Hamptons for our product. We found a great location in East Hampton, and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity when we learned the space was available.

How do the three of you divide the responsibilities of running this company?

Alex Mill is small company, and we all work in one office together. We all get to multitask and wear many different hats, which is great.

What categories can we expect next?

We launched denim in the Spring with a focused assortment and it was a big success. We are continuing to build out our denim business, as well as our accessories.  We’re excited for what’s to come.

The 260-seat restaurant and poolside lounge showcasses a floral archway entry and opens up to the bright and airy space helmed with a green herringbone bar, floral banquette seating and reclaimed wood walls filled with photography of ocean and mountain landscapes shot by New York City-based artist Lee Jaffe.

DuJour talked with Abrams, who’s been coming to the Hamptons for 25 years, to learn about the new venture and what he loves about the North Fork.

What do you love about the North Fork?

It feels like Montauk circa 1998. Everything feels local, unaffected and gorgeous.

What’s your favorite North Fork memory?

First time I went wine tasting on the North Fork. I was amazed at the quality of (some) of the wines.

How did you get into the wine and hospitality game?

I was a partner in a restaurant called The Lion and then White Street but had always dreamed of owning a vineyard. I have had a wine collection for almost 30 years.

What was special about this vineyard that you wanted to acquire it in 2021?

The moment I walked in, I recognized the untapped potential, at first in the physical space perched above the 42-acre property and then when I got to spend some time with the vines and wines I knew with some significant investment and changes we would have a fantastic luxury winery.

What’s your favorite wine varietal?

I tend to be a cabernet and pinot noir drinker.

What wines have you released thus far? What’s next?

We offer three wine collections–EV&EM, Ev&em2 and Reserve–with around 2-8 wines in each tier. We are slowly rolling out the Reserve tier of our 2022 vintages, and are in the process of redesigning our wine bottles to reflect the stripes that are showcased on our rosé.

Favorite places in the North Fork to visit?

Main St Biscuit is our go to for brunch–best pancakes I have ever had anywhere. Schmidt’s farmstand is a must for their horseradish mustard and Harbes Farm is an amazing place for the kids.

The Shoals is a new waterfront hotel in Southold, situated on the North Fork and overlooking the Peconic Bay and Shelter Island. The property boasts 20 hotel suites and 20 boat slips, making it accessible by both land and sea. The hotel’s owners have partnered with local favorite family business Little Ram Oyster Company on an expansive oyster program that will be operated out of a waterfront building on the property. The Thomas Juul-Hansen-designed property pays homage to nautical history by integrating custom marine design elements into its spaces. The building’s cedar-shingle exterior and clean lines are reminiscent of New England modernism, with two stories of guest rooms thoughtfully situated for views of the bay and marina.

The newly restored Pridwin Hotel and Cottages will reopen on Shelter Island with a new look after an extensive two-year renovation under the ownership of Cape Resorts (Baron’s Cove in Sag Harbor) and the Petry family, which has owned and operated the resort since 1961. Nestled on more than seven acres of Crescent Beach, the 49-room luxury destination resort features 16 charming cottages, a private beach and pool, full-service spa and a 100-seat American restaurant. “With a timeless look and emphasis on comfort and the joy of simple pleasures, The Pridwin offers guests and families a fun, cheery escape from daily life,” said Curtis Bashaw, managing partner of Cape Resorts. “Our hope is for future generations of travelers to continue to enjoy the newly restored resort the way it has been cherished since it first opened almost 100 years ago.”

New York City chef restaurateur PJ Calapa is taking over Astro’s Pizza in Amagansett, alongside investor and Resy co-founder Ben Leventhal. Calapa, who owns Scampi and The Spaniard, will offer his take on traditional Italian dishes and pizza, complete with a full bar.

Roberta’s has opened in Montauk. Co-founders Brandon Hoy and Carlo Mirarchi took over the former Arbor space, which is 5,400 square feet, includes an outside patio and two bars and seats close to 165. Look for at least a half-dozen pizzas, including its signature “Ursula’s Parade” with Littleneck clams, mozzarella, and calabrian chili. Bread baked to order in the wood oven will accompany house-made stracciatella. Pastas will feature local fish and shellfish. Natural wines, fresh cocktails, and draft beers from some of the most interesting breweries around will keep the party going. Inventive desserts, such as a bay leaf panna cotta and root beer soft serve ice cream will round out the menu.

Your one-woman show follows your career and personal life from before you got to New York City to the present day. What made you decide to tell your story this way?

One-woman shows tend to have an autobiographical element so it seemed like an essential part of the form. But mostly it’s a universal story—a person with big dreams comes to the city to make it. Naturally, there are ups and downs. And now, forty plus years later, there are still ups and downs. Life goes around and around like a hula hoop!

What was the most difficult thing to share with an audience?

People seem to think the show is very revealing, but it doesn’t feel that way to me, probably because it was originally about three hours, and I ended up cutting it down quite a bit. I still have lots and lots of material left for a memoir!

How does it feel to perform on stage?

It’s a lot easier than writing a novel! I’ve been doing lectures and appearances for years, so it’s not all that new, just much more structured. And it’s physical. I workout much more to be able to have the stamina to do it.

Do you get stage fright?

I don’t. At this time in my life, if something made me really uncomfortable, I wouldn’t do it.

“Is There Still Sex in the City?”

What part of the show do your audiences seem most intrigued by?

Probably the fact that my career encompasses much more than Sex and the City the television show. They’re impressed by how many best-selling novels I’ve written.

What have you been surprised about when it comes to your audience?

Mostly how young they are. There are lots of women in their twenties and thirties. They dress up and wear the shoes. I love it.

What have you learned about yourself performing the show?

Sometimes I think I should have pursued an acting career, which was something I thought about doing when I first came to New York and was quite young. I didn’t pursue it because it was so overwhelmingly sexist, and, of course, the casting couch situation was rampant and I didn’t want to deal with that. So it’s nice to be able to explore this part of myself at this time in life.

Your alter ego, Carrie Bradshaw, is also back in the spotlight now. Which of you is doing better in 2022?

I love seeing Carrie Bradshaw back in the spotlight, but she’s definitely going through a lot.

What do you feel is missing on television these days?

I’d love to see adaptations of my books Trading Up and One Fifth Avenue.

So what has he learned along the way?  “It truly is a business where no one job is any more important than any other, and everyone relies on one another in order for everything to work smoothly,” says Duke. “Being able to roll with the punches is paramount.”

The idea was originally born in 2019 when then Sag Harbor mayor, Kathleen Mulcahy, approached Tutto Il Giorno’s Gianpaolo De Felice, who runs the popular Italian restaurant with wife Gabby Karan, about a product that would alleviate area’s issues of traffic, parking and driving under the influence. De Felice partnered with entrepreneur Jack Brinkley-Cook, the son of supermodel and Hamptonite Christie Brinkley, to launch the eco-friendly venture this summer following the success of Rove Shuttle—the duo’s other transportation service focused on luxury rides out East from Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Passengers can book shuttles until October 31, 2021, using the mobile app available through Apple’s App Store.

We have just about every backyard game ever made, but our favorites are badminton, KanJam, Ladder Ball, and nighttime bocce with light-up balls. We love biking from our house to Lazy Point, where we can see across Napeague Harbor to the Walking Dunes Trail. We take the dogs for a truly unique hour-long hike over there! If we’ve got the time and legs for it, we head further east on Old Montauk Highway to Montauk Lighthouse. We try to leave time for lunch at Lobster Roll or the Clam Bar. There are amazing trails around East Hampton airport that I ride with my son, and we’ve done sections of the Paumanok Path, a 125-mile hiking/biking trail. We enjoy kayaking off of West Neck Point Road in Southampton and we also keep a 16-foot Hobie Cat on Havens Beach in Sag Harbor.

East Hampton arts center Guild Hall has lots in store this summer. The first, Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks, featuring more than 40 new paintings and watercolors by Alexis Rockman, opens June 12 and runs through July 26. Curated by Andrea Grover, Guild Hall’s executive director, these works by the American painter explore globalization, natural disasters, colonization and climate change.

The New York–based Rockman has depicted a darkly surreal vision of the collision between civilization and nature—often apocalyptic scenarios on a monumental scale—for over three decades. “I’m fascinated by the history of the iconography of shipwrecks and nautical history,” says Rockman. “And what better place to have this bouillabaisse of tragedy, hope and despair jam-packed full of great ideas and moments. So many things can be shipwrecks.” The artist also contributed artwork to visually unique films like Life of Pi, collaborating with directors Ang Lee and Darren Aronofsky. A companion catalog by DelMonico Books will be published in June.

LongHouse Reserve

LongHouse Reserve, the 16-acre nature reserve and outdoor sculpture garden in East Hampton founded by the late, great Jack Lenor Larsen, has reopened with new works on display. On view this season are two bluestone boulders onto which poetic phrases were carved by legendary poet, activist and artist John Giorno, who passed away in 2019. The two outdoor sculptures, “Do the Undone” (2019) and “You Can’t Hurt Me Cause Storms Can’t Hurt the Sky” (2019), are installed amongst daffodils in the vast garden, a lovely tribute to the New York artist, who spent his summers in Mattituck on the North Fork. He’s perhaps best known for his text paintings of recent decades, which feature curt and contradictory messages excerpted from his poetry—imperative, deadpan, sacred and sometimes profane. With their ironic clash of immaterial language and solid substance, these stone poems play with issues of transience and permanence, the text fragments appearing as chance apparitions.

Several factors made the monarch population’s annual journey from Mexico to Alaska almost impossible. So the philanthropist and cosmetics entrepreneur took matters into her own hands, designing a line of eyeshadows whose packaging was emblazoned with butterflies. “We raised awareness and funds to give to the scientists helping purchase land in Mexico to secure the monarch’s winter habitats,” Chantecaille explains. “This was the beginning of a long journey to use my company to help causes I really cared about around the world.” The ensuing makeup palettes and products were not only beautiful but gave back to conservation efforts globally. Chantecaille took on oceans, coral reefs, whales, turtles, lions, elephants and more.

But this year, the brand returns to the butterflies after 32 philanthropy collections to help restore healthy populations of pollinators like butterflies and bees. “With the recent fires and pressure on the food system during the pandemic, restoring 40 acres of pollinator habitat in California’s Central Valley is an important project,” she says. “We are excited to be part of creating a healthy environment for pollinators to survive and thrive in.” The proceeds from sales of the brand’s new collection of Lip Chic shades and Eye Quartets support the Xerces Society and boast a butterfly on each pastel case. Chantecaille, for one, can’t wait for the return of the butterflies this summer. Until then, she’s enjoying time by the beach with her family. “I love the light. I love the air, and I love the wind—the mixture of the aroma of the ocean, the trees and my flowers is so unique,” she says. “I love the natural abundance of this place.”

Macari Vineyards in the North Fork recently debuted its Bergen Road Bungalows glamping concept for the ultimate in socially distanced luxury wine tasting. In partnership with Terra Glamping, Macari has set up six winterized platform tents, each of which is decorated by White Flower Farmhouse and local designer Jesse Elliott. The tents are completely shoppable, with every item from blankets to antique tables and chairs available for purchase. They can accommodate anywhere from 2-8 guests and are available to book for an afternoon of wine tasting.

“It was the perfect time to rethink our rooms and spaces for a new era. In the past, I thought of our rooms as barefoot-chic surf shack rooms—a place to change from your swimsuit to a cute outfit for dinners, parties and concerts. The new rooms are more for working and spending time in them.”

Cardoso tapped designer Kimberly Bevan of Denton House Design Studio to reinvigorate the hotel’s bohemian spirit and add more functionality to each room. Bevan is the chief designer for Mike Meldman’s Discovery Land Company, which operates private residential clubs in Cabo San Lucas, the Bahamas and Maui, among others. “I was a huge fan of her work long before meeting her,” Cardoso says. “I’ve never been so lucky, I don’t think anyone but Kimberly could have pulled this job off.” Bevan selected beachy Serena & Lily pieces and sourced local carpenters to craft daybeds, bed frames, desks and closets. “Now, people need a place to work. And we never had closets before–just hooks for your board shorts and beach hat!”

So what’s Cardoso’s favorite room on the property? “Room 21, because it features original art from Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe and it feels very special staying there.” Gallerist Max Levai curated the art for the rooms.

When was the vineyard started?

My father Christian started the vineyard in 1988. He was a man with great creative vision and a huge passion for life. Wölffer Estate Vineyard & Stables was the realization of his lifelong dream and a true labor of love. Now, my father’s one-time weekend getaway spans more than 470 acres. My brother Marc and I took over the business in 2013.

Have your varietals changed over the years?

With the help of our winemaker and partner Roman Roth, we produce mainly merlot, chardonnay, cabernet franc
and cabernet sauvignon. Our unique combination of Bridgehampton loam soil and breezes from the Atlantic Ocean provides maritime conditions perfect for achieving the balance of ripeness and acidity that has come to define our style.

What new products have you launched in your tenure?

Our dry ciders and gin have extended us into new categories, and we recently launched a grüner cider. Crisp apple notes complement light acidity and bubbles bringing about a fun, fresh and youthful surprise for the palette.

What aspect of the estate is particularly close to your heart?

The stables are particularly important to me. We have an extraordinary equestrian center used for training, schooling, year-round boarding and instruction, and an 80-stall facility with the largest indoor riding ring on the East Coast.

What are your favorite local haunts?

Gibson Beach in Sagaponack and the Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island. For meals, The Crow’s Nest and Estia’s Little Kitchen and of course, Wölffer. And Judith Desirée Skin Thérapie for facials in Sag Harbor.

Lighting! There is nothing less flattering than entering a bright home. Sometimes I will go to parties at other people’s homes and subtly walk around lowering the lights. Candles also work magic, and they are often much more affordable than flowers for tabletop decor.

The two-part summer soirée, held at Havens Beach, began in the morning with a brisk WPA-sanctioned paddle race and ended in the early evening with a sunset fête. The winners of the paddle race were celebrated at an awards ceremony that also toasted to the largest fundraisers at the event, Team SOS.

Event sponsor Lilly Pulitzer stayed true to the fashionable pink event with customized decorations including surfboards on display that definitely encouraged the summer theme. President of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Myra Biblowit, went onstage to announce that the foundation will award $64 million to 300 scientists for breast cancer research. “Death rates from breast cancer have decreased by 40% since BCRF was founded 25 years ago and research is the reason,” she said. With $1.4 million raised over the weekend, the summer party was a success.

Now in Southampton Sweat’s fourth year, the certified yoga instructor, health coach, natural food chef, and fitness instructor (who also has a masters in clinical social work) has turned her passion for wellness into a bonafide experiential operation. “Five years ago, I have to say we were first to market,” Landon says about her foray into the fitness festival world. “But it was very obvious to me [that fitness] is a community, and a connection and energy people can bond over.” Upon witnessing Southampton’s own loyal community firsthand through the several Juice Press locations that are there, Landon knew this could be the perfect setting for people to burn a “Southampton Sweat.”

As for merging pop culture and fitness, Landon counts Christie Brinkley‘s daughter, Sailor, as a friend and fellow fitness-lover. After experiencing 2017’s festival, Sailor was eager to bring her mom to host the whole thing this year. “It’s all about the disrupters and game changers in fitness,” Landon says. “They all share an audience. There’s definitely this I’m part of this tribe or that tribe, but on this day, we come together as a collective.”

For the 2018 festival, fitness fanatics can enjoy pop-up workouts by New York’s most coveted studios including The Class by Taryn Toomey, AKT by Anna Kaiser, Mile High Run Club and Tonehouse. Top trainers will also be on-site to lead group classes, including Alex Silver Fagan and Akin Akman. “If you wanted, it could be five straight hours of NYC’s toughest workouts,” Landon says. Although for those seeking a more voyeuristic experience, she says, “if you want to just come and hangout, it’s the best people-watching place.”

Music by Coco Robert, aka Coco The DJ, kept party goers dancing for hours. The soirée served as a viral campaign ahead of the launch of Jim Allen’s Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, set to open June 28.

The true star of the party, Fanning, was sparkling in a floral-printed Cinq à Sept dress and Christian Louboutin heels, offering a sophisticated and sweet summer style. CEO of Swiss watch manufacturer Zenith Watches, Julien Tornare, presented the Alienist star with an elegant Elite Ladies Moon Phase with Diamonds wristwatch, which she kept on her wrist while posing for pictures and mingling with guests throughout the party. Notable attendees included Fanning’s boyfriend Henry Frye, designer Andrew Warren and former Commissioner of the NYCPD Raymond Kelly.

Fanning is slated to appear in this summer’s highly anticipated blockbuster hit, Ocean’s 8, a heist comedy spin-off of Steven Soderbergh’s trilogy, due out June 8.

In that quarter-century, Behun’s immediate surroundings have evolved. Today, she shares a 22,000-square-foot beachfront estate on Southampton’s Meadow Lane (a.k.a. “billionaires’ lane”) with her husband, iStar Financial Chairman and CEO Jay Sugarman, and their two kids, flanked by neighbors such as Ian Schrager and Calvin Klein. While their sprawling glass-and-stone masterpiece might be straight out of a Sex and the City dream sequence, Behun’s path to peak Hamptons was gradual. “I’ve been coming to the Hamptons for 25 years, first renting, then buying a small house; then when our kids were born, building our dream house.

Behun splits her time between the Hamptons and Manhattan, where she runs her high-powered interior design firm, banging out projects for the likes of the Delano hotel in Miami, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, all while producing a line of furniture and homewares, Kelly Behun Studio. Both in her personal and professional life, it’s clear Behun has a gift for making dreams a reality.

A native of the Pittsburgh suburb of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Behun always strove toward higher ground. “I moved to New York directly after college because I had always imagined myself eventually living here,” she says. “I had romanticized it from movies and books my whole life and didn’t really have a Plan B, so was greatly relieved when I finally moved here and discovered it really was all that and more.”

But it was her hometown roots that magnetized her to the Hamptons in the first place. “It’s funny, because whenever my family visits the Hamptons, we always remark that it is a bit like Sewickley-by-the-sea, so I guess it wasn’t a coincidence that I was drawn here as an adult.”

That said, Behun’s tastes have made no small impact on the Hamptons landscape. A former protégé of Philippe Starck, Behun’s proclivity toward modernism is in razor-sharp contrast to the archetypical shabby-chic Hamptons home.

Her and Sugarman’s property’s expansive grounds, anchored by a show-stopping infinity pool, have made it the perfect venue for their causes; the home has been the backdrop to fundraisers for God’s Love We Deliver, New Yorkers for Children and the David Lynch Foundation, which teaches Transcendental Meditation to at-risk populations. And while Behun and Sugarman’s 25-year marriage may be one of the most grounded partnerships in all of Long Island, Behun says meditation is no substitute for communication — especially when it comes to decorating. “We generally agree on things, but of course a few times I’ve had to pull out that old chestnut of a threat, ‘Do I come to your office and tell you how to do your job?’” she says. “But I get my way.”

Power Lunch: Candy Kitchen. Old school. Chicken over Greek (no onions). Estia’s and Pierre’s are certainly in my rotation.

Cocktail Hour: The Beacon in the summer. Since my client is the owner, there is always a warm seat for me.

Retail Therapy: I enjoy doing a round of retail therapy in East Hampton. On the weekends I take my two daughters and we can always find something to buy.  Sometimes, it’s a book at BookHampton, sometimes a pair of workout shorts at Lulu. James Perse and Varvatos are a must.

Feild Trip: LongHouse Reserve, which is very close to my house. I can go there to meditate.

Date Night: East Hampton Grill. The food is so consistent even in the winter. My birthday is in February and the fire makes it cozy and warm.

Hidden Gem: The beaches anywhere along Napeague. It’s where I proposed to my fiancée.

At EMP Summer House, an East Hampton pop-up by the Eleven Madison Park team opening in June, Daniel Humm and Will Guidara provide a fabulous new setting for seafood-centric dishes like grilled fish and bouillabaisse. Newly renovated, Oreya reopens in Southampton’s Capri Hotel with a refreshed menu by 21-year-old wunderkind chef Greg Grossman (formerly of Alinea and Georgica), which includes a decadent foie gras hummus. The minds behind Manhattan’s Amali and Il Cantinori are set to debut Calissa, in Water Mill, where Executive Chef Dominic Rice—an alum of Jean-Georges and Narcissa—brings a Greek flair to the leafy enclave. And at Sag Harbor’s just-opened Lulu Kitchen & Bar, chef Philippe Corbet serves up specialties like wood-fired pizzas and a grilled whole black bass. This summer, Bridgehampton’s Topping Rose House debuts communal Friday night dinner parties in its rustic barn. Expect passed appetizers and specialties like Parmesan-encrusted chicken and tuna tartare prepared by the chefs at the inn’s new Jean-Georges restaurant.

Starting July 16, multimedia artist Clifford Ross installation Light | Waves takes over The Parrish Museum’s lobby, gallery and façade. For the piece, a meditation on the Long Island Sound, Ross developed a new way to digitally print his hurricane photographs on maple veneer. He pairs these with  massive LED screens projecting  all-encompassing visions of crashing waves. “I have been obsessed with the ocean my whole life, starting with my childhood on the beaches of Amagansett,” he says. “The waves and shifting light of the East End of Long Island are completely mesmerizing.” Following Ross show will be a 35-artist survey of photorealist paintings—some so vivid they’ll make you do a double take—opening on August 6.

The long weekend also marked the start of Surf Lodge’s tenth annual summer concert series, a musical tradition that, like the rest of Montauk, has exploded in recent years. According to owner Jayma Cardoso, some of the “surf staples” on this year’s lineup—like singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter—have been taking the property’s small Fort Pond-adjacent stage since Surf Lodge’s inception in 2008. But this year’s lineup also includes some seriously heavy hitters like Lupe Fiacso (July 16), Grammy-nominee Anderson .Paak (July 30) and ZZ Ward (August 12). 

With the hot spot’s second big weekend of summer upon us, DuJour caught up with Cardoso about her favorite musical memories from the past decade.

Over the past ten seasons, which Surf Lodge concert was your favorite?

I think Willie Nelson. Just because it took me four years to finally get him. We had his son perform and I think everybody else on his label perform before his manager would allow Willie. It was incredible. And Jimmy Buffet jumped in and performed with him. I feel like he’s so true to Montauk. It was hard to top that. We’ve had really great bands that are super big like The Flaming Lips and The Kills. But I also have to talk about those smaller bands who are now really big. Is it always important for you to highlight new, up-and-coming bands? 

For sure, it’s always been part of our series to get the young up-and-comers who are on the cusp. It’s funny because I just tried to book Leon Bridges again this year, and they were like, “I think he has one date available.”

What are you looking forward to for this summer? 

Music wise, Ben Harper. Arts wise, we’re working with this incredible artist Richard Phillips. He’s curating this series for us with some really amazing emerging artists. Our first one was over Memorial Day weekend. We actually asked Richard himself to do a show with us and he was like, “Well, I think I have a different idea for you guys. I think I’ll curate your entire series this summer with people that you may not know yet but they are incredibly talented and doing things that are catching my eye.” Sometimes you just have one idea in mind and then organically it just goes a different direction. I think that for me has been the biggest surprise for the summer so far. I’m really excited about that.

Perhaps the town’s most prominent development has been the ongoing renovation of Gurney’s Montauk Resort, the 90-year-old institution that in December bought out the neighboring Panoramic View resort for $63.9 million. Part of the former Panoramic is now being transformed into The Residences at Gurney’s, 15 oceanfront homes priced between $4.7 million and $12 million. Around the same time as the Gurney’s acquisition, J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler sold Andy Warhol’s famed Montauk estate for a cool $48.7 million.

As area prices shoot skyward, the hospitality industry has wasted little time catering to the town’s trendier new inhabitants. New York culinary staples Tacombi and Grey Lady have both opened Montauk outposts, and business mogul Marc Rowan has underwritten two new eateries in town. But while local business owners welcome the influx of patrons, many natives are disgruntled by Montauk’s makeover. Last summer, strict noise ordinances were enforced after some 300 locals protested the legions of partygoers who’ve flooded the once-sleepy, nature-centric community. But times change, and if you’re not much for bird-watching on beach cruisers, there’s now a SoulCycle just down the road.

“You feel like you’re in a New England fishing town,” says Michael Namer, the CEO of New York-based Alfa Development, who has owned a house in Sag Harbor for decades. “Development plays out very different here than elsewhere in the Hamptons.”

But even if Ralph Lauren has yet to leave his stamp on Sag, it’s abundantly clear that it is no longer the unassuming little town it once was. Nowadays, BMWs vie for parking on Main Street, Donna Karan has an outpost of her Urban Zen shop on Bay Street (her daughter runs the celebrated Tutto Il Giorno restaurant next door), and one of the penthouses at Watchcase—the former Bulova watch factory that developers Cape Advisors are transforming into a super-luxe condo, replete with an on-site spa and year-round saltwater pool—was recently listed for $10.2 million. (Move-ins are expected to begin around the end of this year, though the development was already sufficiently polished to host a designer showcase in June.)

 But while Watchcase’s multi-million-dollar condos are indicative of the “new” Sag, the developer has, in true local fashion, been eager to keep the building looking like the old Sag, both inside and out. Not only did Cape Advisors hire architectural preservationist powerhouse Beyer Blinder Belle for the project, but on a recent tour, Cape Advisors executive David Kronman pointed out details like the ceiling’s original exposed yellow pine beams, which were restored with ground-up walnut shells rather than through the more common, but much harsher, practice of sandblasting. 

Of the 43 units released last summer, 35 were in contract as of this June, the month that the 65-unit development’s remaining condos (with the exception of the “bungalows”) were listed. Both New Yorkers eager for a no-headache second home and locals looking to downsize have driven sales, according to local brokers.

But the fact that the town feels like an open secret has, if anything, made locals more protective. “Change is not necessarily good in Sag Harbor,” cautions Sotheby’s Robert Florio. “It was a working class town, famous for being the un-Hamptons. The people who live in Sag Harbor don’t want to lose that.” The real estate market, he notes, “may be the one signal point where you see change.”

Indeed, several big sales have already happened this year. In February, a 12,000-square-foot Tudor mansion on six acres in the waterfront enclave of North Haven sold for $31.7 million. The seller, Richard Demato, was downsizing to the “Howell House,” a 9,000-square-foot mansion in the village, where he owns an art gallery. That home, which went for $9.75 million, was the year’s second most expensive (so far).  Even comparatively modest properties in the village now fetch between $1.5 million and $9 million, according to Douglas Elliman broker Gioia DiPaolo. “They’re sweet historic houses,” she says. “They don’t have swimming pools, but they’re charming, charming, charming.” (She added, however, that some newcomers are working around the inherent size limitations by buying up several properties and turning them into compounds.)

In response to the influx of moneyed new residents, many New York-based retailers and restaurateurs—among them perfumer Bond No. 9, Italian bistro Doppio and Harlow and the first outpost of Nobu co-founder Richie Notar’s Manhattan eatery—are also flocking to town. Or, at least, they’re trying to: Locals have their own ways of saving Sag, Sotheby’s broker Michael Daly says, relating the story of a major retailer who tried to rent a spot in the village last year, only to be rebuffed by an owner who wanted a local business.

“Unlike East Hampton, which has become a mall, Sag Harbor still has a wonderful, colorful, fabulous scene,” says Keith Green, the Halstead broker who’s selling Harbor’s Edge, a new 15-unit waterfront condo development where prices range from $2.5 million to $6.5 million. And despite the bigger yachts in the harbor and the influx of traffic and upscale shops, DiPaolo says that the town has a way of showing newcomers how to behave. 

“I’ve definitely seen some tantrums,” she admits. “People who are new in town don’t always know they’re supposed to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, but they quickly realize that they shouldn’t be showing certain digits when people try to cross the street.” Overall, the growth hasn’t led to a wholesale alteration of the atmosphere. “It really seems that people want to come here because they enjoy blending in with the local scene,” DiPaolo explains, “not because they want to change it.”

Here, Dr. Hyman elaborates on what he considers to be its most worrisome effects and how we can all raise our kids to be sweetly satisfied sans the sugar high.

How is sugar a toxin?

When I say sugar is a toxin, I’m talking about the pharmacological doses many people consume today. Consider this: the average kid eats about 34 teaspoons (or about half a pound) of sugar a day, and much of it comes from soda and other sources of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). These pharmacological doses of sugar—and keep in mind, white flour and honey fall into the sugar category—have made us fat and sick, switching on numerous obesity and diabetes genes. In fact, they turned on all the chronic disease genes in our body today. This is the largest uncontrolled drug experiment ever conducted on humans. Food is information, and HFCS as well as other Frankenfood sweeteners have created serious hormonal havoc as well as stressing out the liver and other organs. Researchers have found mercury in HFCS. They’ve also learned HFCS punches little holes into your gut, creating what we call leaky gut and contributing to inflammation.

Does this mean kids can’t eat birthday cake or celebrate Halloween?

Considering that it comes from real sugar and not HFCS, the occasional piece of birthday cake or whatever dessert isn’t going to create problems. But I strongly emphasize the word “occasional.” Halloween used to be October 31. Now, it starts in late September when drugstore aisles line shelves with HFCS-filled treats and carries into New Year’s Day. For some people, “a little” is a slippery slope because it’s such a nebulous term.

Are sugar alternatives like stevia or agave any better? Is there such a thing as a “better” sugar?

My advice is to give up stevia, aspartame, sucralose, sugar alcohols like xylitol and malitol, and all of the other heavily used and marketed sweeteners unless you want to slow down your metabolism, gain weight and become an addict. Many of us have lost touch with what constitutes “sweet,” and we have to retrain our taste buds to appreciate the natural sweetness of, say, natural vanilla or roasted almonds.

Where should parents and caregivers be watching out for sugar when it’s not clearly labeled?

There are at least 57 names for sugar, and manufacturers cleverly disguise it within ingredients you wouldn’t recognize as sugar. Anything ending in “ose” is sugar. If food labels bewilder you, simply switch to whole, unprocessed foods and you can guarantee you won’t get HFCS or other man-made sweeteners.

Where does fruit fit into the equation? 

Fruit is nature’s sweetness wrapped up with nutrients, antioxidants and fiber. I especially love low-glycemic fruit such as wild blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, blackberries, and even kiwis. Unless they have metabolic syndrome or other blood sugar imbalances, most kids do okay with some higher-glycemic fruit like mango or pineapple, although lower-glycemic choices are always better. Fruit juice is another story. Stripped of its fiber and often heavily processed, it provides a huge sugar surge similar to soda. Fruit juice is mostly fructose, the most metabolically damaging sugar that wreaks havoc on the liver, and can have as much sugar if not more than a soda. Quick answer: Keep fruit and skip the juice.

The organization is heading to the Hamptons on August 20 for its inaugural summer luncheon, bringing together over 150 like-minded tastemakers, parents and influencers including moms Molly Sims, Kelly Rutherford and Tiffani Thiessen. DuJour recently chatted with Gigi Lee Chang, CEO of the organization and a New York mother herself, to find out what’s in store.

How did you get involved with HCHW?

I came to hear about the organization eight years ago when I was starting my own company. I had founded an organic food company, which was and continues to be a supporter of the organization. And then about three years ago, I joined the board of directors. Then last year, we had a transition in leadership so they asked me to step in and be the CEO.

How have you seen the work of HCHW grow since your start up until this point?

I think that in the earlier days of the organization, there was more focus on advocacy and legislation. And in recent years, there’s been much more of a push towards educating parents. I think we’ve come to realize that that’s how you really create change. You want to give parents the tools so they can feel empowered to take action, and through those actions, you can affect the marketplace.

It’s kind of this push-pull where certain organizations focus on the legislative and the advocacy piece—the push side—and then we focus on the consumer education so they demand different products, better regulation and more control to pull the market. You really need both, and we found that for us, with the voice that we have and the history being started by two parents, we  wanted to focus there.

This is HCHW’s first Hamptons luncheon. What’s the idea behind it?

The organization, historically, was started in the L.A. area and our headquarters are still in L.A., but in the last three or four years, we’ve gotten more of a New York base. So we wanted to have an event where we can bring together our supporters and highlight the organization, because you can do a lot of things virtually, but people always like an event. And then summer in the Hamptons is just such a natural [idea].

So are you seeing more and more people New York with similar values?

In New York, there are people who are aware and this-way minded, but there’s not as many as say, Los Angeles.

Why do you think that is?

I think generally it’s the New York lifestyle. We’re not so close to nature, we’re not in mid-70 degree weather everyday, 360 days a year. So people aren’t thinking about these issues as much as when you have a garden or you have access to the outdoors. I think also New York convenience plays a larger role than anything. For example, if you’re out of dish soap and your local bodega doesn’t have [anything non-toxic], you’re just going to buy what’s there because you need dish soap. It’s just convenient.

The flip side is that there are people with similar values here, but there hasn’t been a way to bring them together. I’ve met a lot of people here who have always lived this lifestyle. One of our hosts, she’s in the fashion world, and her parents are big fashion people, and she’s one of the most committed, dedicated people. She makes her own home cleaner. You wouldn’t have necessarily thought that, but when I first met her, it was just one of those things where she was just like, You’re my people!

There’s going to be a panel at the event. Are there any hot topics right now that you’re hoping will be discussed?

We have four really great panelists. Each of them will really cover their own topics, so we’re going to talk about food, allergens and GMOs, which is a hot topic as we start going into fall. There’s sort of this catch-22 that people think if you have allergies, you need to keep things extra clean, but often times the cleaners themselves have ingredients that can be irritants and can also trigger allergies, so I think that’s really important for people to realize.

Then we have somebody who’s going to talk about beauty and personal care. Sixty percent of what’s put on your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream, which is another important thing to realize. For example, the EU has banned 1,300 chemicals from being used in cosmetics. Guess how many the U.S. has banned? Eleven. Just another example of important things we don’t realize.

Falco’s five-year-old daughter, Macy, was particularly taken with an orange coat, but the highlight for her? “The candy, of course!” said Falco. After show snacks included nutella and banana sandwiches and a candy bar laden with treats from Dylan Lauren’s Dylan’s Candy Bar. Following their front-row experience, the girls gathered for nail art and manicures from Essie and a braid bar replete with multi colored ribbons and roses. To cap of the afternoon, 14-year-old singer Madison Beer (who was discovered by Justin Bieber) took the stage and performed, closing with her unreleased single, “Melodies.”

Catching up with Jessica Alba, who had daughters Haven, 2, and Honor, 5, in tow, after the event, DuJour learned why she dresses her girls in Ralph Lauren. “I love the mix of colors and patterns,” Alba explained, “and all the layering, and the tall socks and tomboyish feel to the clothes. It’s all so cute!”

The Foundation supports talented up and comers in theater, dance and film by awarding individuals with scholarships, apprenticeships and fellowships. “Jeff is an emerging artist himself,” said the foundation’s executive director, Toby Boshak. “He was inspired by both Grace Kelly and Princess Grace,” and duly, his all-dress collection reflected both icons’ personas. Garner’s goal, he said, was to impart the “soft and feminine” aspects “exuded by the Princess.” The ecologically-driven designer works solely with sustainable and recycled vintage fabrics. Garner also grows plants for his own dyes, giving his creations a characteristic shimmer: Several of the frocks were a lustrous marigold hue, apropos of the princess’ favorite color, yellow.

This summer, and continuing for the next two years, Ruschmeyers executive chef Brian Loiacono has brought on the team from The Smile in Mahattan to help craft a menu that not only uses the best of the week’s freshest locally sourced ingredients, but also all of the leftovers. Along with Matt Kliegman, Carlos Quirarte and Melia Marden, Loaicono says that, “it’s important for us to really take advantage of these amazing local ingredients, to be creative with our scraps so that we use every little bit.” “For example, we do a half romaine lobster salad and then we’ll have this pile of romaine scraps that are perfectly good, so we chill them and add them to a romaine soup with salmon and local micro greens.”

Aside from these menu items, The Smile team has put their twist on the now famous Ruschmeyers clam pizza, along with a soft shell crab poboy and minted snap peas. Recently new to the menu is a s’more in a jar, a dessert that keeps with the Rushmeyers adult summer camp vibe. As The Smile’s Melia Marden puts it, “it’s a locally driven menu and there is a real commonality between our food and Brian’s food—simple, clean, fresh.” For a real farm-to-table summertime meal, that’s the only stamp of approval we need.
