The Waldorf Astoria Chicago has reemerged from a top-down renovation, led by Chicago-based hospitality design and architecture firm KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group, who first designed the interiors in 2009. With a refreshed lobby, lounge, dining spaces and guest rooms, the reimagined Chicago mainstay combines modern amenities and luxurious details with a timeless flare. “With grander accommodations, new dining settings and the return of a beloved Chicago cocktail lounge, Waldorf Astoria Chicago will sit at the epicenter of a quintessential Gold Coast experience,” says Ari Glass, the head of real estate at Mansueto Office, which owns the property. The guest rooms and suites boast Coco Chanel-inspired redesigns, with Parisian accents in the form of black and white color palettes, polished wood flooring, lavish mirrors and furnishings, dramatic floral headboards and more. The Presidential Suite will offer guests superior luxuries and an exclusive fitness room with a Peloton bikes, Echelon Mirror, hydro rower and other state-of-the-art wellness equipment for private in-room use. A major highlight of the hotel’s renovation includes the return of Bernard’s, a chic cocktail bar infused with a new design featuring rich colors, tweeds from the Scottish Highlands and equestrian details.

The Omakase Room at Sushi-san is a new 10-seat omakase experience where master sushi chef Kaze Chan will showcase his inventive Japanese cuisine through an 18-course menu that will include influences from his roots in Vietnam, China and Japan. Products will be impeccably sourced from around the world; the chef’s relationship with the Yamasaki family at the Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo provides the restaurant with the freshest seafood available, with a focus on wild, line-caught fish. The design of the space is reminiscent of a modern Japanese loft, where you will feel like you have been invited to a dinner party at chef Chan’s home. Once seated, guests will be encouraged to interact with the chefs at work while they dine; the chefs will have raised custom Hinoki cypress cutting boards so chefs and guests are at eye level with each other. The team worked with local ceramicists and stonemasons to create serving pieces, including a custom-made lazy susan at each seat. Sake, wine, Japanese whiskey and cocktails crafted with hand-chipped ice are also on offer.

With a unique creative process that is triggered by everything from fashion and media to social injustices, Chicago-based artist Nick Cave has been celebrated for his vibrant works of art for decades. Cave got his start studying with the likes of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City and working as a display designer for Macy’s. His new exhibit, Nick Cave: Forothermore, runs at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago through October 2 and showcases just how expansive and immersive his art truly is. “We are both thrilled and humbled to work with Nick Cave on the first major retrospective of his brilliant work over the last 30 years,” says MCA director Madeleine Grynsztejn. “Nick’s passion for allowing art and beauty to address deeper questions of our time has been a tremendous influence on the artistic community and to those who encounter his work in Chicago and abroad. Nick’s awe-inspiring creations and stunning performances encourage us to think of a more harmonious future.” The exhibit will include over a dozen works, including never-before-seen pieces from Cave’s popular Soundsuits series alongside his new series, Soundsuits 9:29, which addresses today’s heightened awareness for racial justice in response to the 2020 death of George Floyd.

Mel Bochner has been a pioneer of conceptual art for nearly six decades, producing thought-provoking drawings, paintings, prints, photography, sculptures, books and installations. His new exhibit, Mel Bochner Drawings: A Retrospective, opens at the Art Institute of Chicago on April 23 and will run through the summer. Featuring nearly 90 works of art from Bochner’s expansive career, this is the first exhibition to employ drawing as an organizational emphasis, signifying Bochner’s artistic influence starting with his earliest drawings in the 1960s through to the modern day. Over the years, Bochner has questioned the definition of a drawing, and through various iterations has explored ideas like language, numbers, visual perception, seriality and the blurring of word and picture through his drawings. This exhibit will showcase a range of interpretative drawings, including traditional drawings from ink, pencil and charcoal alongside mixed media pieces made from burnt matchsticks on paper, oil paint on newspaper and wall drawings in powder pigment. These works further cement the idea that drawing, by definition, might not be so black-and-white.

How did the campaign come about?

Having adopted four pets from PAWS Chicago, it only felt natural to partner with this charity that changed my life for the better. With every coat sold, we provide a homeless pet free transportation to a no-kill shelter with the help of PAWS Chicago. You don’t think about it, but the costs of the transportation are a financial weight.

Where do the proceeds go?

PAWS puts great effort into transporting pets from disaster relief areas nationwide to their fantastic medical center in Chicago, and then placing them into great homes for life. Every faux fur coat we sell covers this cost.

What makes Maison Atia so special?

I am a sixth-generation furrier, so the vernacular of a furrier runs through my veins. As I started to shop for faux fur for myself, I didn’t understand why there wasn’t a faux fur option that I thought was chic. I saw so much potential in this new material, and I knew I could transform faux fur.

Do you have a favorite from the fall/winter collection?

My favorite coat is the Genevieve trench. It is bold and chic, but also feels cozy. I didn’t realize when I designed it that the world would be turned upside down and that we would all look for comfort for our bodies and souls, but here it is!

Why Chicago?

Chicago is our home and it was easy for us to start here. I also believe Chicago needs something like this more than Los Angeles or New York City. There are lots of fashionable women here.

What are your best styling tips?

Accessories are key! Never underestimate the power of hats and belts. I grew up with a mother who never stepped out without a scarf around her neck, Chanel ballet slippers and red lips.

What trends are you looking forward to this spring?

Statement bows and ruffles! I’m excited for the feminine looks I’m seeing on the runway to come to life. My celebrity
clients are all about sex appeal, and I cannot wait to get my hands on some of these monochrome sheer numbers too.

Why is vintage appealing to you and your clients?

You can always rely on designer vintage to come back. When I buy my inventory, vintage is important to us because it really sets us apart from other rental services. We dress a handful of celebrities and this is really what they are looking for.

“This brand offers products that people of color believe are meant for them and is affordable,” says Rogers, who is eager to expand the men’s and skincare product offerings. “We will also add shades to our existing formulations that consumers have requested and feature highly pigmented colors that pop on the darkest of skin tones.” Now under the control of two African American businesswomen for the first time in its history, Black Opal will continue to be a mainstay product line among makeup artists working in television and film and for celebrities on and off the red carpet. “I first noticed the brand in makeup artist kits when I was having my makeup professionally done,” says Rogers. “It has also served people of color for over 25 years having been developed exclusively to tend to the specific skincare and makeup needs of this group.” We talked to Rogers about this next chapter for the cosmetic brand and learned what changes are ahead.

How do you plan to bring Black Opal into the future digitally with so much change in the industry in recent years?

We will not ignore the base that has supported this brand for over 25 years but will open up a dialogue with them. It has already started–I can’t wait for our consumers to see how their conversation is impacting the direction of the brand along with our vision to excite them with new products, makeup artistry and real faces behind the brand.

Things have obviously changed in the market since Black Opal was founded and many brands are now more inclusive in their shade offerings for people of all colors. How do you compete with those brands in this new climate?

It’s all in the quality of the products. The biggest advantage that Black Opal has is it’s formulations that are tried-and-true. The brand has been serving this consumer long before it was trendy. There are ingredients in these formulations that are just not being used by companies that are producing more shades. It is just not cost-effective for them. By focusing on only people of color, we are able to deliver, in my opinion, a superior product.

What are some of your favorite products from the brand?

I’m love the primer, foundation sticks and mascara.

What excites you the most about tackling this new project?

I am thrilled to partner with another black woman to lead this incredible brand into the future. We have also decided that our mission is to continue to supply high-quality skincare and makeup for people of color at an affordable price and do what we can to promote a message of financial independence.

It’s this global attitude that has led Ferrone to become one of the visionaries of the design community, as well as the director of graduate studies in industrial design and a clinical associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Never one to settle on a single career path, she has also created a thriving glassware and furniture business. “I try to give my creations both qualities of form and function without insisting that one overshadows the other,” she says. “I also make pieces that live in the present. While we see a lot of design referencing past eras or riffing on particular vintage details, I try to keep my focus on the form as an expression of today and the future.”

This desire to serve up function but also make that object aesthetically pleasing is what first drew Ferrone to designing housewares. “I long to capture and inspire these special social moments where friends come together to celebrate, and do so with extraordinary pieces to enhance the experience.” No collection from her tremendous body of work showcases this more incisively than her May line. Designed around her favorite month, it reflects a time when the season transitions from spring to summer, and longer days mean more gatherings around good food and drinks.

The basketball legend, like many pro athletes, augmented his collection there. Six months ago, the Mancusos made the switch to Ferraris only, making them one of only four exclusive Ferrari dealers in North America: Nick, also a racer like his father, serves as general sales manager. Cassie, the marketing and events director, says, “We are an Italian family working with one of the greatest Italian brands in history. It’s a dream.” As for Dad, at age 71, he’s still loving the ride.

With his business partner, Jeff Donahue, McElroy has unlocked the formula for the consummate corner bar. The key, he says, is unpretentiousness. Each spot—from Estereo’s cheery Latin American soundtrack to the come-as-you-are backyard spaces at Sportsman’s Club and Ludlow Liquors—
reflects McElroy’s jovial and breezy position.

Originality is the other ingredient in McElroy and Donahue’s anything-but-prototypical concepts. “We try to practice daily creativity,” he says, highlighting Sportsman’s Club’s cocktail offerings. The four-item roster is crafted nightly and influenced by anything from current events to weather. Estereo, an ode to the music and spirits of Latin America and the Caribbean, is a playful departure from Logan Square’s many cocktail destinations. With Ludlow Liquors, the duo’s first destination in the city, where stirred cocktails are poured by the ounce, the two men have transformed a nondescript Avondale corner.

This winter, the team debuts its much-anticipated second Logan Square project, Young American—a contemporary take on a tavern with an emphasis on great wines, seasonal cocktails from newly minted beverage director Julia McKinley (Lost Lake, Milk Room), and food with a healthy bent. After that for McElroy: a wintertime escape to Portugal. “Once we’re nice and settled into the opening, I guess I can give myself a little break,” he says.

Later on, Ravyn Lenae, a mere 19 years old, captured the audience’s attention from the Red Stage with her powerful range and dazzling sequined dress. With her microphone adorned in bright red, this young singer released such emotion and passion into her performance, no one was looking away for a moment.

The larger Chicago natives on this year’s lineup included Smino, Noname and of course, Chaka Khan. With iconic hits dating back to the late 1970s like “I’m Every Woman” and “Ain’t Nobody,” Khan delivered a nostalgic-filled performance featuring her in the spotlight but her back-up singers close behind her. Other top performers included Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett who performed several songs off her newest album, Tell Me How You Really Feel. Headliner Tame Impala offered an electric close out on Friday with a memorable light show and as frontman Kevin Parker mentioned, no rain!

Pitchfork prides itself on offering a range of musical genres, from punk rockers Japandroids (who created a magical mosh pit during their Sunday performance) to epic hip-hop sensation Ms. Lauryn Hill. Hill headlined the final day of the festival in honor of the 20th anniversary of her first and only solo album, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. Though Hill has garnered a less-than-amazing reputation for arriving late for shows, leaving certain hits out of the set list and sometimes not showing up at all, Hill came to the Green Stage at Pitchfork 20 minutes late and performed almost the entire album. The 43-year-old New Jersey native left out her cover of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” but she stayed on stage for nearly 20 minutes longer than her cut-off time, so overall, the crowd was satisfied. Who really wants to be the one to kick Lauryn Hill off the stage, anyway?

A James Beard Award winner and the first female Iron Chef, Izard’s recently released cookbook, Gather & Graze, has an entire chapter devoted to cooking over live flame and includes fan favorites such as banh mi burgers and Kalbi beef ribs. “It is really my favorite part of the book,” admits the chef, who is partial to late-season sweet corn on the cob.

In addition to her three restaurants, Izard is also training for a sprint triathlon and has a two-year-old son to chase after, but Chicago’s most industrious chef is relishing the city’s summer vibes. “The restaurants are so much more lively with the patios open and all the folks out enjoying the West Loop,” she says. “Chicago really comes to life in the summer.”

In fact, the next development will come from an unlikely yet famously reliable source: London-based, taste-making media company Time Out Group, publisher of the Chicago edition of Time Out. Next year, it will unveil a tri-level, 600-seat food hall in Fulton Market featuring a collection of local purveyors curated by the magazine’s editorial staff. With the star-power of big-name chefs and the enthusiastic patronage of locals and tourists alike, it appears the food hall trend has plenty more courses to come.

It was her eye that drew her here in the first place; while on a business trip from New York, the beauty of the city’s architecture against Lake Michigan was enough for her to change careers and relocate simultaneously. “I had been working as a consultant in corporate America,” she recalls. “It was a bit of a transition, but a very happy one.” In 2004, she opened Hejfina, a concept lifestyle store cast in the image of Europe and Asia’s museum-quality boutiques. “I grew up going to Seoul, Korea, where they have these concept lifestyle stores, and I’ve always been obsessed with stores like Colette in Paris,” she says.

Black stocked the store with then–fellow fashion hopefuls like Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone, as well as boldface imports like Comme des Garçons. Ahead of its time for Windy City retail (Rei Kawakubo’s conceptually similar Dover Street Market opened in London the same year), the store predated the exaltation of the cult brand. In fact, reigning cult designer Virgil Abloh passed through the House of Hejfina long before the rise of Off-White. “I enlisted design students to propose designs to the store,” Black says, “And one of them was Virgil. I ended up passing on [his design], but we became good friends and collaborators.”

After a successful five-year run, the store closed in 2009. A stint as Chicago magazine’s Style Editor followed but since 2016, Black has taken a step back from fashion to focus on art and architecture. While serving on the boards of the Renaissance Society and the Architecture & Design Society, Black and her husband Brian have added local Chicago art stars like William J. O’Brien and Theaster Gates to their personal collection.

Now, Black says, she’s ready for a fashion comeback: “I’m working on a business more in-depth in 2018 that’s design- and fashion-related.” She may have it all, but with an eagle eye like Black’s, there’s always more waiting to be discovered.

The Smithe sisters, all in their thirties, worked in the family business as teens but pursued different career paths in adulthood. By last year, though, each had returned to the company their great-grandfather founded. “We all trickled back in, and it happened really organically,” says Meghan of the industrious quartet, who collectively has 17 children.

While their father and grandfather are still actively involved in the day-to-day, the women have taken over the company’s marketing, design, advertising and buying efforts—and immediately went about altering brand perceptions. “Nothing is left unchanged,” Meghan notes.

The first order of business: ditch the longstanding, highly recognizable ad campaign featuring their father and two uncles. “It worked really well for a long time, but post-recession, we saw people’s sensibilities had changed,” says Meghan. “Customers were more concerned with what we were selling versus the people who were selling it,” she adds. The new campaign, dubbed “Smithe Family Makeovers,” showcases Smithe furniture in the
homes of actual clients, revealing the handiwork of the company’s designers in HGTV-esque episodes.

The campaign was inspired in part by a partnership with designer/house-flipper Jeff Lewis of the Bravo show Flipping Out. Lewis teamed up with Smithe’s merchandising team to create in-store vignettes, and also featured the store on his show. Additional partnerships with the likes of Cynthia Rowley and Ellen Degeneres have exposed the company to a new customer base.

“My sisters and I represent the viewpoint of our younger clientele,” Meghan says. But she’s quick to point out that the business is still very much a multigenerational effort, noting that their 81-year-old grandfather still regularly meets with clients. “We feel like we can now speak to the multitude of generations who shop with us,” she says.

It’s impossible to go anywhere in the West Loop without someone name-dropping Bad Hunter, whose vegetarian-inspired menu has taken the city by storm. Thanks to heavy-hitting plant-based dishes like white corn grits with confit fava beans and charred squash paired with brown butter farmers cheese, not to mention punchy cocktails like the Cosmo made with fresh berries and Campari, this buzzworthy eatery is bound to be more than a flash in the pan.

Few places embody Chicago fine dining quite like Oriole. The 28-seat dining room, tucked in a nondescript building in this once-industrial neighborhood, is tasting menu only – but you wouldn’t want to order any other way. Chef and owner Noah Sandoval’s dishes bring seasonality and style to a whole new level – like the golden Osetra caviar and coconut dashi or the Hudson Valley foie gras topped with a scallops, dried blueberry and oxalis.

Oriole

One of 2017’s most talked about openings, Smyth & the Loyalist offers guests two distinct game plans: one a multicourse tasting menu in the tony upstairs dining room of Smyth, the other a laidback, burger-friendly atmosphere downstairs at the Loyalist. Don’t leave either without trying a cocktail – like the Brown Dog, made with tequila and white vermouth and dusted with pine pollen.

Avec’s small, communal dining room specializes in Mediterranean food with a Midwestern twist. With dishes like pork shoulder and squid ink stew, the dinner menu is nothing to shrug at, but it’s the brunch that has made this spot an institution. On Saturdays and Sundays, you’ll find a line of hungover locals waiting over an hour for a bite of signature wood-oven baked French toast.

Wicker Park/Bucktown

The restaurant formerly known as Trencherman is now Trench, a cozy, white-walled space that’s more neighborhood friendly than the original. While it boasts a fresh, more youthful interior, the eatery’s updated menu is really what brought the locals back. For brunch, go with biscuits and gravy or brioche French toast, and for dinner, you can’t go wrong with the soft burrata and heirloom tomatoes.

Paying homage to San Francisco (but with a welcoming Midwestern vibe), Presidio is a hidden gem in a refurbished brick building. Known for the cocktails (and distinctive menus, hand-drawn by a local artist), the lounge is consistently abuzz, shaking it up with travel-inspired drinks like the Cachaça and watermelon spritzer from Brazil.

At first glance, you might think Dove’s Luncheonette was a retro American diner, but one look at the menu and there’s no mistaking its provenance. In the Americana-themed dining room, chef Dennis Burnard serves up incredible Southwest-infused Mexican food like barbacoa enchiladas with slow-roasted beef chuck and spicy pozole rojo with crispy pig ears – along with a giant selection of imported tequilas.

A relatively new addition, Publican Anker boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and epic people watching. You’ll find a lighter menu than at its sister restaurant, Publican, with a more focus on vegetables and fish. In addition to lighter fare like the smoked mackerel or the golden beet salad with pistachios, you’ll also find a few meat-centric dishes like pork collar with green tomato chow chow.

Logan Square:

Giant is easily one of the area’s most talked-about restaurants thanks to its mix of gourmet and comfort. Don’t miss the house made tagliatelle with king crab and chili butter and the spiced onion rings, but save room for the little biscuit, a silk-soft morsel served with jalapeño butter.

No place in Chicago showcases the evolution of the city’s culinary identity like Fat Rice, which offers up a unique spin on one of the Windy City’s trademarks: the hot dog. They reimagine the street food as chunks of Vienna beef hot dog, hot peppers, celery seeds and mustard inside a sweet Portuguese roll. Dogs aside, the sardine escabeche and curried lamb rice noodles are can’t-miss.

With its low-key, flannel-clad clientele, Longman & Eagle is arguably one of the most relaxed Michelin star winners in town. The food looks like pub fare but tastes high end, like the beef fat fries with dill pickle aioli or gnocchi with goat ragu. Or you can go full grunge with their famous PBR breakfast, served with two eggs, house potatoes, bacon and a can of the classic hipster libation.

Lincoln Park:

Summerhouse Santa Monica does a nearly perfect impression of California cuisine, minus the warm weather all year round. But with a seasonal menu full of irresistible bites – from the basic (but delicious) avocado toast to the unexpected Idaho rainbow trout served with a side of mashed tots – this bright and airy restaurant, including its outdoor patio, is nearly always full – even in winter.

Summer House

A neighborhood favorite 10 years running, Boka reflects chef Lee Wolen’s pride in local ingredients and artistic presentation. The heirloom tomatoes, for example, are served with fresh herb garnishes and striking black garlic and plums. Although most dishes are served a-la-carte, the waiters and chef recommend the 9-course tasting menu, comprised of a sampling of each the chef’s picks.

Boka

What’s an affluent neighborhood without an oyster bar? Besides fresh caught, cold-water oysters, the New England-themed Oyster Bah’s specialties include an innovative take on a lobster roll stuffed with crab, mayo and shrimp, and famed Old Bay-seasoned boardwalk fries. The best part? You can nosh on all of it over a 40-oz. of rosé. It just doesn’t get any better.

There are both pros and cons to attending a festival, but the latter can easily be avoided. Simply put, instead of having to endure a long line for an underwhelming burger, or protecting your phone’s battery as if it were a prized jewel: upgrade.

Chicago’s Lollapalooza is one of the few festivals that seems to understand the importance of offering an upgraded experience–two experiences, to be exact. Guests can either opt in to the VIP or Platinum packages, which include perks like multi-level viewing platforms in VIP and reserved front row areas for Platinum guests. This year, Platinum ticket holders will have the opportunity to watch sets from side-stage viewing platforms on the main stages, giving you the chance to actually see the artists perform, as opposed to watching the screen from the back of the crowd. 

VIP & Platinum Manager Courtney Murphy gave DuJour the inside scoop saying, “Our VIP Lolla Lounges offer a laid-back vibe. It’s more chilled out and very amenity-driven.” She continues to describe the Platinum experience which is Lollapalooza’s next-level program, saying, “It is exclusive, elevated  and truly a rockstar experience. Guests can get up-close and personal to their favorite artists on all of the main stages. Plus, we are offering meet and greets with the artists for the first time.” Obviously the music is a priority at Lollapalooza, so having exclusive viewing access is key and with the new addition of artist meet and greets in Platinum, you can get even closer than you thought possible.

Entering the festival that hosts upwards of 300,000 attendees every year can be time consuming and cut into your time exploring Grant Park or even performances. VIP and Platinum ticket holders will enjoy the luxury of more convenient and dedicated entry lanes to avoid the crowds, and both upgrades offer access to golf cart transportation to navigate Grant Park (which is one mile end-to-end). Murphy makes it a point to mention that there will be more golf carts dedicated solely to the Platinum guests, which has limited capacity, ensuring those elite guests receive the most personal attention. 

And as for sustenance, VIPs will have a shaded bar in the Lolla Lounge North serving artisanal cocktails and beers. This year, Chicago’s iconic Lollapalooza music festival is doing its part by hosting a Tito’s Handmade Vodka social media campaign that will donate $10,000 to veterans. The campaign is in partnership with Bunker Labs, a non-profit program dedicated to helping military veterans start and grow their businesses.

Here’s how it works: Lollapalooza attendees will snap a photo in front of the “#LoveTitos” installation and share it on social media using the #LoveTitos hashtag. For every post, Tito’s will donate $1 up to Bunker Labs until the goal of $10,000 is met.

From McGee’s annual birthday bash to impromptu campfire chill-outs, the quaint, peony-lined backyard of the couple’s Logan Square greystone buzzes all summer long. McGee says it’s a reprieve from his typical post behind Lost Lake’s bar.  “We can relax more in our backyard—it doesn’t matter if there’s a straw on the ground,” he says. In fact, Allison and McGee let their friends do the bartending when they’re off the clock. “I set up a make-your-own drink station and let our guests get to work,” she says. McGee concurs: “It’s interactive, and allows Shelby and me to mingle.”

The show marks Murakami’s first North American retrospective in 10 years as well as the MCA’s fiftieth anniversary. The artist, donning an on-brand octopus hat, personally greeted arriving guests, who included Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Nick Cave and Larry Gagosian.

Murakami’s oeuvre, defined by an artistic philosophy known as “Superflat” that mixes “high” and “low” art, is one of the most valuable and provocative of any living artist; his NSFW sculpture, “My Lonesome Cowboy,” sold in 2008 for a reported $15 million. His high-profile collaborations, such as a 2014 music video for Pharrell Williams’s, “It Girl,” are known for being commercial yet sneakily subversive. As for his tentacle-themed blowout at MCA, which raised $3 million in museum funds, it seems Murakami’s grip on combining the high and the low is tighter than ever.

Cacciatore started the business in 2009 upon finishing college. The tenants were initially artists and fashion-focused companies, but the building now plays host to a variety of businesses.

The massive 250,000 square-foot area boasts 156 studios, event space, a rooftop, an upcoming restaurant and the Remix Project, an alternative art school for underserved young creatives. And visitors don’t have to look far to catch a glimpse of the tenants’ work. The wide hallways are full of large-scale pieces. Neon signs, paintings, artwork done directly on the walls and sculptures are all around.

Cacciatore is more than just a landlord. His artistic sensibilities can be seen in the structure and décor of the building. He has an eye for design and has been extremely creative in utilizing repurposed materials in the process—one example being the bathrooms in the bridal suite, which were built out of shipping containers. He even purchased a CTA train, utilizing the seats in one of the Remix Project classrooms.

Tell us what led you to open Bub City.
RJ: It was originally a large BBQ place our father owned from 1989 to 1998. Over time, we got so many requests to reopen it. About a year ago, we wanted to start working on a BBQ restaurant, and we created our own Bub City.
J: When we think about our childhoods and our father’s places, Bub City always stood out. After we opened Paris Club and RPM Italian, we wanted to create a hangout for ourselves. We hooked up with this great mixologist, Paul McGee [of the Whistler], for the cocktails and worked with chef Doug Psaltis on the food.

What was the inspiration for your new tiki lounge, Three Dots and a Dash?
J: It came out of Paul McGee’s passion for tiki drinks. That culture has faded away, and we wanted to pay tribute to what tiki was and also move it into the 21st century.
RJ: Tiki’s gotten a bad name, and most of the drinks are made from mixes. We’re reviving what was great about them: fresh juices, great rums and syrups.

Your restaurants are all hits. What’s the secret?
RJ: We always start with being inspired by great food, and then we develop a concept around it, looking for holes in the market.
J: All of our restaurants in Chicago are within walking distance of each other. Since it’s the neighborhood where we live and go out, we know what’s missing. So we saw there were no places with live country music that served great BBQ, which is what we’re doing at Bub City.

What’s the best advice your father gave you?
M: Our dad told us to find our passion and then work our hardest at it. There was never any pressure to work in the restaurant business because he wanted us to do what we love. I tried other things, like teaching kindergarten, but never loved them. When I started in restaurants, I realized I loved going to work.

In October, Emporio Armani (25 E. Oak St., pictured left) opened, featuring a sweeping staircase and two stories of black and silvery space to house the big brand’s diffusion line for men and women. 

Lanvin (116 E. Oak St.) swung its doors open, after nearly a year of anticipation.

The Zaharoff (110 E. Oak St. ) flagship comes with a large-scale mural—and tailored suits, ties and shirts for the classic gentleman—while Gallery Aesthete (46 E. Oak St., pictured right) brings men an avant-garde space filled with Comme des Garçons, Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester.

One block south on Walton, here’s hoping the third time’s the charm for Sofia (100 E. Walton St.), the vintage, indie, local—and beloved—designer’s women’s shop that has once again resettled.

Brit-based Eskandar (70 E. Walton St., pictured left) ushered in luxe and clean-lined looks with its new store, as well as a varied selection of housewares and accessories.

Just north of Oak on North Rush, an impressive two-level Starbucks—there’s booze at the bar upstairs—has emerged next to Prada, which completes the makeover that includes Jellyfish, Ted Baker London and Scoop NYC.

We’re looking forward to seeing what spring and summer look like from Marmot, which opened just in time to buffer Chicagoans against biting winds with its down-filled outerwear (932 Rush St.).

Christian Louboutin (58 E. Oak St.) finally arrived at the former home of the Esquire Theater, promising to transform the Windy City into the Red-Soled City. 

And other retail prospects abound: Saint Laurent is said to be coming to the Waldorf Astoria with new neighbor Brioni, and Tom Ford will take up space in the Esquire. The Gold Coast has become more gilded than ever.

We look for brands that focus on great-fitting, high-quality clothes with solid value, like John Varvatos, Jack Spade, Eton, Jeremy Argyle, Gant Rugger.

What’s your personal style?
It’s a combination of Ivy preppy/California skier/Northern Midwest lakehouse culture.

What’s next for Trunk Club?
We’ve started a pilot program of custom suits and shirts. We’re launching a designer trunk from Eton. And we’re contemplating a new office in another large city—perhaps Dallas, Atlanta or San Francisco.

A party for trunk club’s big move

It’s hard to imagine plusher headquarters than Trunk Club’s River North penthouse. The revelers who joined CEO Brian Spaly to inaugurate the new digs agreed, as they sampled food prepared by Jared Van Camp (Old Town Social, Nellcôte) and drank craft beer and cocktails. The celebration was cohosted by Gant Rugger, one of the biggest lines that TC stylists pull from. The expansive space is large enough to accommodate the company’s growing team and to display its menswear collections. But with a bar and impressive city views from the roof deck, will anyone ever want to go home?

Guests like Facing History‘s co-founder Judy Wise, Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard and Allstate CEO Tom Wilson checked out the installations about people and communities that have experienced racism and injustice.
