Speaking to Rosenthal’s leadership and creative vision, De Niro shared, “Jane is a tough business leader, but she’s also a patron of the arts. It comes so naturally to her because she appreciates what artists do. Jane understands the soul of the artist because she has the soul of an artist. She’s the perfect leader of the Tribeca Festival and our production company because she’s a born storyteller.” Additional tributes were shared through video messages from longtime friends and collaborators who were unable to attend, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, Kathryn Bigelow, Spike Lee, Leslie Linka Glatter and Darren Aronofsky.

Whether Cohen was singing along with RHOA star Kim Zolciak-Biermann to her banger “Tardy For the Party” or on the receiving end of a surprise smooch from Million Dollar Listing star Fredrik Eklund, Cohen treated the dedicated Bravo superfans to a weekend of laughs and “woo-hoo’s.” Events were held at three venues across New York City including the Manhattan Center, Skylight Modern, and Union West. At the Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom and Grand Ballroom, fans could attend live panels, stop by the picture-perfect Club House replica for a few photos, and even buy-up to attend the very special Vanderpump Rules After Party on Saturday night.

The release party took place last month and was hosted by American Cut Steakhouse. The night was filled with live music, athletes, and admiration for Rivera’s accomplishments.

Nostalgia filled the air as notable baseball athletes reminisced the first time Rivera walked across the field making his debut as, “Sandman.” Rivera entered the world of baseball in 1995, he quickly ranked as one of the most successful players, leading the Yankees to much success in the 2000’s.

During the release party, Jean-François Sberro, President of Hublot North America, presented Rivera with his very own limited-edition King Gold as well as the Titanium for Mariano Rivera Foundation.

The hall of famer partnered with Hublot and T&J Jewelry to perfectly showcase his story as “Sandman” as well as to pay tribute to the team that got him there. The famous New York Yankees’ pinstripe blue color adorns each watch, showcasing Rivera’s dedication to the team and Rivera’s retired jersey number 42 is placed directly above the 12. The pieces come in two variations: the Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Mariano Rivera Titanium in a limited run of 42 pieces and the King Gold in a limited run of five pieces. Each piece in the 47-piece collection is accompanied by a mitt signed by Rivera.

“The Brooklyn Museum sets the precedent and is the paradigm of a community-based art museum that’s needed, desired, and necessary,” said art advisor Gabby Palmieri, who served as the evening’s auctioneer. “We had many generous people bid on sending a child to camp for $1,000… a deserving child gets to go to camp where it otherwise wouldn’t have been possible. Brooklyn serves Brooklyn as a community.”

This was the museum’s first time offering pledges to its Artists Ball guests, as typically funds are raised by selling tables. The museum also sold tables for the Artists Ball in advance.

“Nick Cave’s message tonight was about effort, support, and compassion… there are 600 people here tonight that don’t need to be here. We want to be here,” continued Palmieri. “A child seated at Swizz Beatz’s table bid tonight… Swizz himself was exceedingly generous. The efforts and contributions make a difference.”

After the seated dinner and auction, more guests poured into the Beaux-Arts Court for the after party where Swizz Beatz DJ’d and artists, such as Brooklyn-based artist Olek, created installations around the museum court celebrating Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, currently on exhibit at the museum.

Guests, some teetering in high heels, wandered through the museum’s galleries which stayed open late last night, with the “Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving” exhibit on display through May 12.

The Brooklyn Museum’s large and wide-ranging collection of art spans 5,000 from regions across the globe. Its collections include Egyptian works, Native American art and artifacts, Spanish colonial painting, and nineteenth and twentieth-century American painting, sculpture, and decorative objects.

Plus, with a surprise performance from Toro y Moi, the party definitely kept guests on their toes. The refurbished 1940s Spartan Trailer boasted a full bar and Instagram-worthy lounge and served up some refreshing Deep Eddy Vodka cocktails. Our favorite? The Lebowski. Served exclusively at the GSD&M party, this drink with was made with Deep Eddy Original Vodka, Carolan’s Irish Cream + High Brew Mexican Vanilla Coffee.

The live music at this SXSW event was epic. Performers included The Get Up Kids, The Joy Formidable, The Beths, Charly Bliss and many others. Held on March 14 to 16, guests sipped cocktails like the classic Slow & Low Old Fashioned (Slow and Low Rock n Rye Whiskey, bitters and touch of sugar) and a refreshing concoction perfect for Austin called, Liquid Sunshine (Slow and Low Rock n Rye Whiskey with fresh lemonade).

FLOODFest 2019 at Cedar Street Courtyard

The fifth annual event was held at the indoor-outdoor Cedar Street Courtyard on 4^th Street in downtown Austin. Hosted by FLOOD Magazine, this year’s event offered performances by White Denim, HÆLOS, MUNYA, Dungeon Family featuring Big Boi, Leikeli47 and many others. Deep Eddy Vodka was flowing throughout this daytime party and there was a Virtual Reality activation for guests to experience inside. Our go-to cocktail was the Ruby Greyhound, made with Deep Eddy Ruby Red Vodka + Waterloo Original Sparkling Water.

Today, the planet’s animal and plant species are under more pressure than ever before, with an increasing number on the brink of extinction. For the first time in the history of our planet, we are entering a period of extinction 1,000 to 10,000 times the background rate, driven by the actions of just one species: humans. As species disappear, we lose both the known and unknown benefits they provide. Evidence is mounting that extinctions are altering key processes important to the productivity and sustain-ability of Earth’s ecosystems. Currently, GWC remains loyal to a docket of core projects, ranging from protecting critically endangered species to embarking on the largest-ever quest to find and protect species not seen in the last decade, in order to make the difference the world needs.

The Javan rhino is one of the critically endangered species—with a known population of just 68 individuals—that GWC aims to protect. Currently, all 68 rhinos are confined to Ujung Kulon National Park in West Java, Indonesia. Conservation efforts include enhancing the strict protection of the remaining animals and their habitat, moving individual rhinos to a new location to establish a second population elsewhere in Indonesia, and controlling the invasive Arenga palm, which shades out the forest floor, preventing the growth of plants that the rhinos eat.

Additionally, the aforementioned quest to find and protect specific species, the Search for Lost Species, is spearheaded by GWC in collaboration with more than 100 scientists around the globe. GWC has compiled a list of 1,200 species of animals and plants that are missing to science and, from that list, teased the top 25 “most wanted” in the world. Quirky, charismatic, and elusive, these species are global flagships for conservation.

Garbero earned an associate producer credit on the films Sex Guaranteed (2017), Middleground (2017) and Club Life (2015). Other accolades include Gerbero’s film The Book of Love premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2016 and Middleground premiering at the Moscow Film Festival in 2017. In between his film projects, Garbero hasn’t been able to stray too far from his love of socializing and nightlife. Through his networking in New York City, Garbero gained positions at Cipriani’s club Socialista, The Blond and 1OAK, allowing him to indulge his social roots while maintaining a career in film.

In 2019, we can expect two new films from Garbero including a romance and an action, again proving that the man is multi-talented on many different fronts.

It was then that I first sat next to Watson, while admiring the beautiful Venetian Lagoon in the garden of Venissa on the island of Mazzorbo, and talked about his dream of conceiving and realizing a Pirelli Calendar. After a few hours spent with Watson, the story of the “magic” that he pulled out of his heart truly revealed the immense beauty of his images. It was a long conversation in which his history, poetry and talent showed me passions, desires, and dreams not yet achieved, including the “mystery” of never having realized a Pirelli Calendar. It was curious that in his expansive career, Watson had never made one, and in response to my question about his “absence” from such an important achievement, Watson confirmed this “strangeness,” adding that if they were to ask him, he would certainly accept and create something different than what he had done until then.

And so, three years later, we met on the night of December 5, 2018 at the Hangar Bicocca in Milan, to celebrate how that dream, the dream, that we had caressed together in 2015 in Venice, had become reality. The 2019 Pirelli Calendar, titled “Dreaming,” is a journey into the lives of women who are captured through the “still image” and show the very essence of their dreams. Compared to past editions of the Pirelli Calendar this is a “conceptual – afore than photographic – return to the very essence of photography,” in which the paradox of the photographer who has “dreamed” of making his own Pirelli Calendar, tells the very dreams of his protagonists showing their fragilities and desires, through a story that Albert himself is the scriptwriter and director.

“I would like people looking at the Calendar, to understand that my goal was to do pure photography, explore the women I was photographing and create a situation that would propose a positive vision of today’s women,” Watson says.

Through the protagonists and their “cinematic” representation, Watson tells the dreams and desires of millions of women engaged in their lives, who continue to “pursue dreams and passions.” This is certainly a more sophisticated way of portraying women in their purest beauty, choosing to feature a natural and almost insubstantial nudity, which only enhances the descriptive ideas of dreams and desires.

“Each of the four women has an individuality on her own; her own specific purpose in life and her own way of doing things. All of them are focused on their future. So, the underlying theme is ‘dreams,’ but the idea behind the whole project is the tale through four ‘little films,’” Watson adds.

The loneliness that model Gigi Hadid portrays, who lives in a glass tower and has Alexander Wang as her only friend and confidant; the passion for nature and solitude of Julia Garner, who plays a young photographer; the dance for Misty Copeland, who makes a living dancing in a club and who practices dancing to become an étoile with her boyfriend, played by Calvin Royal III; or the dream of success for Laetitia Casta, a painter who lives in a one-room studio with her boyfriend, an artist and dancer played by Sergei Polunin. These are the four stories told that offer a unique and positive outlook on women today.

The 40 color and black and white photographs shot in 16:9 format inspired by Watson’s great passion for cinema have radically shifted the attention from the characters to the stories themselves, making all the subjects formidable actors in a much more elaborate project. It’s as if for once celebrities with their popularity have lost something, to become interpreters of something bigger, in a cinematic representation of real life.

Watson took the stage at the gala for his Pirelli Calendar and began with this sentence: “I am the photographer of this calendar. If you liked the images I’m happy, if you didn’t like the photos I apologize for having taken them.” These words alone show his greatness and his sensitivity which make him one of the greatest masters of modern culture.

Wherever you went on the seven-story yacht (owned by Four Seasons Toronto owner Shahid Khan), you were surrounded by food and beverage offerings from master mixologists like Fatima León, of Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City, Keith Motsi, of Four Seasons Hotel Beijing, and Ashish Sharma, of Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur. León, whose complex and tropical “Surrealismo” cocktail with tequila, guava juice, cinnamon syrup, ginger, cardamom and lemon juice finished with cotton candy was a huge crowd pleaser, relished the opportunity to create a special drink for the occasion. “The experience of being here in Miami for Pop Down has been amazing,” says León. “The colors, the people and the cocktails have been so inspiring for me during this trip.” León is planning to update the menu at her Fifty Mils bar in Mexico City and due to the popularity of this cocktail, she’ll likely add the creation next year.

Michelin-starred Chefs Daniel Boulud, of Café Boulud and d|bar at Four Seasons Hotel Toronto, and Chef Mauro Colagreco, of the newly reopened Four Seasons Palm Beach, showcased luxurious dishes like caviar, crab and lobster gelee and an egg cup stuffed with truffle, mushroom and fois gras bavarois (Boulud) and a warm mushroom tart with parmesan and black truffles (a signature at Colagreco’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants-ranked restaurant Mirazur) and pumpkin ravioli with white truffles (Colagreco). Chef Colagreco was excited to head up the coast to Palm Beach for the hotel’s opening. “It’s an amazing project, a very beautiful oceanfront hotel so there is lots in common with my restaurant in Menton, France,” says Chef Colagreco. “We have a pizza oven, tandoori, yakitori, many methods of cooking with fire.”

“Shahid Khan is so generous to invite us all to be here on his magnificent ship,” says Boulud. “I’ve been very happy with my relationship with the headquarters in Toronto. Tonight, we brought Cafe Boulud Toronto and a little bit of Restaurant Daniel with our charcuterie selection tonight; a hallmark of our Toronto restaurant menu.” Boulud has been busy this week in Miami visiting friends in the art world as well as spending time with chefs like Brad Kilgore at his new restaurant Kaido in the Design District. “Miami’s cultural life is vibrant,” says Boulud. “The blend of South American culture with European and American here in Miami is unique.” Boulud is an avid art collector, especially of artists that he’s gotten to know personally including Vik Muniz, Manolo Valdés, Chuck Close and Esteban Vicente.

On the lower deck spa level (compete with barber shop, sauna, pedicure station and hair salon no less), the sensorial experience continued as guests were invited to create customized perfumes from French fragrance house Atelier Cologne while surrounded by citrus trees. Also on the boat, two-story video walls displayed the works of Spanish artist Ignasi Monreal, whose digital paintings are featured in Four Seasons: The Art of Hospitality, the brand’s new coffee table book from Assouline. But that wasn’t the only artwork on display. En route through Island Gardens Marina where the superyacht was docked for the occasion, attendees were greeted by Glass Horizon, the latest Skynet installation from artist Patrick Shearn and studio Poetic Kinetics. The 35-foot high sculpture was constructed using rope, monofilament net and approximately 67,000 holographic Mylar streamers spanning 10,800 square feet and was on view as a public art work throughout the week.

The brand has plans to bring the next global event series to Hong Kong in early 2019 during Art Basel.

One of the most highly anticipated gastronomic happenings of the year, the festival is about to embark on its twelfth installment, officially commencing on Thursday, December 13 and concluding with the Grand Tasting on Sunday, December 16. More than 15 events will take place during the course of the long weekend, including intimate dinners, wine and cocktail tastings, and cooking demonstrations led by a panel of renowned chefs and culinary stars.

Esteemed headliners include revered guests such as famed French chef Daniel Boulud (best known for Daniel, his Michelin two-star restaurant in New York City); James Beard Award-winning chef and cookbook author Ashley Christensen (behind some of Raleigh’s most popular hotspots, such as Poole’s Diner, Beasley’s Chicken + Honey, and Fox Liquor Bar); and renowned Latin-American chef Jose Garces (who operates more than a dozen respected venues throughout the East Coast).

Other recognizable talents include some of Food Network’s most treasured chefs and personalities. Festival attendees can look forward to seeing an array of familiar faces like Amanda Freitag (as seen on the hit series Chopped); Robert Irvine (from Restaurant: Impossible); and Duff Goldman (star of Ace of Cakes).

This year, the event will be headquartered at the legendary Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach, which recently     underwent an estimated $45 million renovation. Aside from mechanical and infrastructure updates, some of the property’s newest features include a remodeled swimming pool, the addition of an adults-only pool, new Cabana Terrace Rooms, and more. But ask any epicure, and they’ll confirm that the most exciting update is undoubtedly the resort’s soon-to-debut restaurant.

Florie’s is Four Seasons Palm Beach’s newest signature restaurant. The concept was created in partnership with internationally celebrated chef Mauro Colagreco, who is also part of the festival’s official lineup of celebrity talent.

The two Michelin star chef is behind Mirazur in France, which was recently named number three on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. The opening marks the Argentine-Italian chef’s first foray into the U.S. culinary arena and will pay homage to South Florida’s relaxed, coastal style. The menu is inspired by Colagreco’s Mediterranean spirit, multicultural background, and international approach, as well as his passion for gardening and earth conscious ingredients. Expect a range of phenomenal dishes, like eggplant and mozzarella with parmesan cream (touched by fire in the hearth oven); wagyu beef with grilled red peppers from Florie’s yakitori grill; and à la broche dishes such as farm-raised truffled chicken finished with albufera sauce, potatoes, chives, and shallots.

“Palm Beach is an ideal place for me with all of its similarities to my home in the South of France including the environment, the sun and the sea,” said Colagreco. “I am excited for the opportunity to work with Four Seasons, a brand that carries values I hold dear such as excellence in hospitality and ambition.”

With its swaying palm trees, cerulean waters, and stretches of seashell-studded shorelines, it makes sense that Palm Beach is a highly regarded retreat. The evening was for a good cause and overall inspired people to help make positive changes in the world. But, the audience could not contain their sheer excitement and shock when Grammy Award winning artist Taylor Swift joined this year’s Billboard Rising Star Award recipient Hayley Kiyoko on stage to play a charming acoustic version of Swift’s song “Delicate.”

The blonde starlet was all smiles on stage, rocking a black blazer dress and black guitar to match. Along with the duo’s epic performance, guests savored sounds from singer-songwriter Regina Spektor, Mitski, Andrew Dost and more. Comedic relief was offered by New York-based stand-up comedian Jacqueline Novak and former Saturday Night Live cast member, Sasheer Zamata.

The evening continued with a set from none other than dreamy darling Lana Del Rey, who was joined on stage by friend Jack Antonoff. The two performed a new song, “Venice Bitch,” produced by Antonoff, and a selection of self-proclaimed “country songs” including “I Must Be Stupid For Feeling So Happy” and “Hey Blue Baby.” The screams from the audience calling out, “you’re a Brooklyn baby, Lana!” as an ode to the singer’s celebrated track, “Brooklyn Baby,” made it clear that the fans were present.

Jack Antonoff closed out the night on the piano, performing acoustic versions of the Bleachers songs “Get Better” and “I Miss Those Days,” with spirited help from the audience. The Talent Show brought together a roster of talented artists and comedians to show their support for creating opportunities for under-privileged youths. The Ally Coalition will continue to fight for equality throughout the year, propelled by the momentum of such a positive night at Town Hall.

Savor Borgata attendees were able to participate in seminars and demonstrations curated by each chef. Geoffrey Zakarian hosted an intimate three-course dinner paired with Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot and Ruinart champagnes, all of which excited guests’s tastebuds the whole night. Zakarian made it a point to visit everyone’s tables to create an intimate atmosphere, enhanced by his charismatic nature that translates into his flavorful dishes.

Bobby Flay spent the afternoon in the kitchen, whipping up a three-course lunch for guests consisting of a Seared Yellowtail Salad, Duck Ragu and a Caramelized Fig and Toasted Hazelnut Tiramisu with Apple Cider and Amaretto Mascarpone Cream. Each indulgence included a Paul Hobbs wine pairing and concluded with a Q&A with Flay, who spoke passionately about his love for pizza and burgers, expressing just how normal his cravings can be.

For the main event, guests attended The Ultimate Food Experience, enjoying live music and a variety of eats that celebrate Borgata’s diverse culinary offerings. There was no escaping a food baby that day as at every turn, more delectable samples were waiting to be devoured. I’m not sure you can call them samples though, when guests were rushing to go back for seconds (and thirds). While walking around to sample bites from a roster of star-studded chefs in a carnival-like fashion, it’s only fitting that fortune tellers and artists drawing caricatures for attendees lined the room as well, adding to the entertainment and excitement of the weekend.

For the third and most recent event in the series, D&G brought to life their No Selfies Please activation, hosted by celebrated photographer Emanuele D’Angelo.

No Selfies Please encouraged guests to ditch their phones and indulge in their beautiful surroundings. In exchange for avoiding self-documentation (sometimes easier said than done) guests were awarded with portraits from D’Angelo. With an eye for catching his subjects in the most authentic light, D’Angelo was an obvious choice to partner with D&G on this event. His works were on display throughout the boutique and the aesthetic was almost too perfect; it felt as though the photographs had been there all along.

In 1983, Mathilde Krim, Ph.D., then a researcher at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and a pioneer in the study of HIV/AIDS, joined together a group of associates to create the AIDS Medical Foundation to help raise private funds for research; two years later, the organization joined with the National AIDS Research Foundation to found amfAR. Since then, amfAR has provided more than $517 million to programs that provide education, research, HIV prevention and advocacy.

“I first become involved with amfAR around 11 years ago when I went to one of their fundraising events in New York, and I was so moved by the experience that very soon after I reached out to them to ask how I could be of service,” says American Horror Story actor Cheyenne Jackson, who has in the past sung at events, helped procure auction items and also helped with fundraising. “An ex of mine was diagnosed with HIV, and it was the first time someone close to me was affected. I felt compelled to see what more I could do. amfAR has been at the forefront since the beginning, and their focus on the science and research was very interesting.”

A leading fundraiser for the organization is black-tie gala events, held throughout the year in Milan, Cannes, São Paulo, Hong Kong and New York; on October 18, the organization will hold the amfAR Gala Los Angeles. The event always draws a crowd of A-list stars; past attendees have included Tom Hanks, Kate Hudson, Angela Bassett, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake, to name just a few.

“amfAR has the reputation and the track record, and their heart is always in the right place,” says Jackson of the organization. “I’m so proud to be a part of this world-changing group of people.”

F4D organization focuses on creating a stronger human understanding of diversity, while putting a spotlight on sustainability and the importance of preserving our environment. The merging of the two worlds of fashion and sustainability was perfectly executed through the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange Project, a collection of sustainable designs created by both established and emerging talent in collaboration with artisans from across the Commonwealth’s 53 countries. The afternoon runway show of looks was ​powered by Eco Age in partnership with Swarovski​, ​The Woolmark Company and ​MATCHESFASHION.COM​, and were originally unveiled at Buckingham Palace during London Fashion Week in February.

Following the runway show, fashion mogul Diane Von Furstenburg offered a heartfelt introduction for Goodwill Ambassador for North & Latin America Fabiola Beracasa Beckman before Melanie Steiner, Chief Risk Officer for PVH, was awarded the Leading Lady Award. Ahead of collecting her award, Steiner said of the company she works for, PVH, “We’re reimagining how we make our products, how we produce them, the fabric we use, the way we design, and the way we put it together and then how we use it and reuse it.”

Later, Livia Firth, presented this year’s Fashion 4 Development Award to philanthropist, humanitarian, sustainability advocate and founder/investor of Net-a-Porter, Carmen Busquets, for her work in recalibrating the luxury fashion industry to benefit the world. On being honored at this year’s luncheon, Busquets said, “We are all being honored. It’s part of being in a community, that’s my honor. My work depends on the work of everybody.” She added how she is so inspired by the women in attendance, along with her friends, family and beyond. Another one of the day’s honorees–and an inspiring woman–was Ellie Goulding, recipient of the Eco Award. “I pretty much dedicate my social media to my music and the environment,” she said of how she spreads awareness. “I try and talk about climate change without it being a scary thing, I try and be a climate optimist and really, I want young people to be as passionate about saving the environment as I am.” By encouraging the younger generations to make a change and invest in their future, these women like Goulding are working to save our planet.

The inspiring luncheon featured a heartfelt acceptance speech by actress and L’Oreal’s newest global celebrity spokesperson, Amber Heard, Angel Award recipient. Following Heard’s mission in support of Syrian refugees in Jordan, the young starlet became even more active in working to better the lives of the women and children around the world.

Though there were dozens of impressive women with admirable missions and goals, the recipient of the Women’s Empowerment Award, Edwina Dunn, had a very simple but powerful message saying, “It’s about girls taking the lead in their own life.” Dunn has created the Female Lead, a female empowerment initiative that tells the stories of Meryl Streep, Tina Brown and many other women in order to showcase diversity and the different definitions of what success looks like.

By merging fashion industry leaders with sustainable living and the preservation of culture, F4D is actively committed to educating, empowering, enhancing and enriching.

From the creators of Pitchfork comes OctFest, a two-day event to be held on September 8 and 9 this year. The second annual craft beer, food and music festival will offer 90 breweries to choose from with over 300 beers to sample. Held on Governors Island in New York City, OctFest caters to the culturally curious; those who want to experience a range of flavors from food and drink to music. October is a website that caters to the spirited readers looking to savor every last drop of the good life. In collaboration between Pitchfork and Anheuser-Busch InBev, October shares all sides to beer culture through essays, travels and events like OctFest.

Adam Krefman, Senior Director of Festivals & Activations for Pitchfork says that between the music from Pitchfork and the food lineup curated by Bon Appétit, “I’m not sure there really is an analogous festival in New York City.” With a focus on celebrating culture, the fest will have two of just 16 Master Cicerones (beer experts) in the world available at the festival to educate and inspire attendees through tastings.

The move to Governors Island this year was to create a larger arena for OctFest, including additional brewery tents, a second stage and other activations. “There will be plenty to explore, from vinyl shopping to a craft fair, and more. It’ll be a nice weekend in the park,” Krefman says.

Krefman highlights that as far as the music lineup goes, Pitchfork’s music booker, Seth Dodson, worked hard to create a dynamic and diverse bill for this year’s fest. “Saturday leans toward forward-thinking R&B and hip-hop with Vince Staples, Saba, and Standing on the Corner. Sunday showcases a few legends, namely Nile Rodgers, Yo La Tengo, and the Flaming Lips,” Krefman says. He adds that there is an effort made to challenge people a bit by booking acts next to each other than you might not see anywhere else. “When it all works right, people come with an open mind and learn about something new.”

With a lineup featuring a range of artists, it is important to note that OctFest has incorporated a 50/50 gender split between performers, making it a true outlier in today’s festival circuit.

With standards (rightfully) raised in the music festival community, Krefman suggests that ahead of any fest, potential attendees may ask themselves, Do I have to drink watery beer and eat funnel cakes among 100,000 people just to see some good music? A couple of truly magical moments members were able to take advantage of this summer were at two very different events, solidifying that these perks will benefit a wide audience. At the 100^th PGA Championship in St. Louis, Chase Sapphire was the official credit card sponsor for the fourth year. Cardmembers (and one guest) could simply show their card and be welcomed into a world of luxury amenities at the Chase Sapphire Cardmember Club, complete with refreshments, premium views of the green and unique activities.

One of the activities offered to cardmembers was a cooking demonstration featuring the creator of the gourmet Korean taco truck Kogi, Chef Roy Choi and Top Chef Season 15 winner, Chef Joe Flamm. The pop-up demo gave members an hour of culinary inspiration in the midst of a day saturated with golf. Chef Joe Flamm said of the experience, “It was really cool to do a pop-up demo in the middle of this golf tournament. And it’s really cool for the Chase Sapphire members. It’s a break in the day to come watch me.” As a Chicago native, he added, “This is not my home city so there are so many people here who have never eaten my food, or seen what I do.”

Expanding the cultural expertise of Chase Sapphire members is a subtle result of these unique moments. From gastronomic exploration to simply having access to a private porch with panoramic views of the golf course, cardmembers are given opportunities to broaden their horizons.

You could purchase tickets ahead of the festival to savor any of the three family-style pairings prepared by Chef Hugh Acheson, International Smoke and Master of None’s Eric Wareheim’s Las Jaras Wine. During these culinary events, cardmembers are encouraged to engage with their neighbors and interact with each other throughout the meal, creating a memorable experience.

Though it may seem unlikely, this part of the desert experiences hot days and cool nights reminiscent of the climate in Napa Valley. In November, L’Auberge de Sedona will host a Mondavi Wine Weekend. During the two-night stay (November 2-4), guests will break bread with winemaker Michael Mondavi, enjoy a four-course dinner curated by Chef Desplechin, who has plated at three different Michelin-star restaurants in France, retreat to a beautifully appointed cottage, and take home a signed bottle of Michael Mondavi Family Estate wine as a memento among other activities. This extravagant weekend costs $3,500 for two people and offers nearly everything a wine connoisseur could dream of!

To whet our appetite, we spoke to Michael Mondavi to learn tips and tricks of the trade, like what to look for when tasting wine and misnomers he put the kibosh on.

DuJour: How has wine evolved over the years? Have palettes changed/what’s stayed the same?

Michael Mondavi: Wine has evolved over the years. It’s really evolved because the quality and freshness of foods have changed. We have the luxury today of beautiful, fresh, healthy natural ingredients and therefore the cooking has been focused not on how do we make it palatable, but how do we enjoy the nuance and the character of the fresh ingredients? Wines need to be more delicate to compliment the fresher, lighter foods and not over power them. I’ve always believed that wine is the slave of the food, not the other way around. An example, over the years, in the ‘60s and ‘70s when I would do winemaker dinners, we would always tell the chef at a restaurant, we want to present this chardonnay, or this cabernet, or this pinot noir. The last 15 or 20 years what I’ve done is I’ve asked the chef what he or she is most proud of serving during this season of the year, what are the best ingredients and what is he or she most proud of? Then we select the wine to compliment that seasonal or that very fresh dish.

DJ: Is there anything you’d want consumers to know about wine that they might not?

MM: First of all, I sadly think most consumers are intimidated or confused about wine, because there are thousands, literally thousands of brands. As a consumer trust your palette. If it tastes good to you, it’s good. And if it doesn’t taste good to you, the expert will very likely agree with you it’s not very good.

DJ: Are there any misnomers in wine you’d like to address?

MM: The more expensive the wine, the better it is. That’s not necessarily the case. It depends on what the consumer or the restaurateur are looking for. If you’re looking for a big powerful wine that needs to be aged for many years, like a great French Bordeaux or a wonderful full body Napa Valley cabernet, then those probably need to be aged and probably are going to be more expensive, but we’re fortunate today there are many wines that are reasonably priced—and by reasonably priced, I mean in the 15 to 50 dollar range—that are delicious. You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy a great bottle of wine today.

DJ: Do you have a guilty pleasure with wine?

MM: Well, I don’t enjoy wine with breakfast yet, but I do enjoy wine with almost every lunch and dinner. A meal without wine is like a day without sunshine. One of the guilty pleasures I have, I am fortunate to have a very extensive personal wine cellar, and it gives me a great deal of pleasure when I have a guest at my home and we go down into the wine cellar and I can pick a vintage of the year of the birth of that individual and present them that wine.

DJ: What are your thoughts on collecting wine versus drinking wine?

MM: If you collect wine and don’t drink it, it’s a waste of great wine. If you collect wine and age it for a bit to enjoy older because you like a more subtle wine rather than a fruity wine, then that’s a wonderful use of a wine cellar.

The wines we’re making today don’t need to be aged for five or 10 or 15 years before they’re enjoyed. In the ‘70s and ‘80s when I was selling wine, I’d say to a consumer, “now put this in your cellar for 10 to 15 years and let it age.” The way we’re getting better maturity of grapes in the vineyards and understanding the viticulture—we’re not winemakers, we’re wine growers—the better the balance and flavor of the grape, the better the balance and flavor of the wine. If the wine is balanced beautifully, you can enjoy it young, and it will also age for 10 or 15 or 20 years, but you don’t have to wait. The way I made wine in the ‘70s you had to wait for five or 10 years, because the tannins in the grape and in the seed were a sharper tannin, because we didn’t have the optimum maturity of the berries. We now understand more as to when to pick the grapes for optimum maturity.

DJ: Is there anything in particular to look for when tasting wine?

MM: When tasting wine the first thing I do is swirl the glass, and smell. Our nose is much better than our palette and if the aroma is clean and fresh, whether it is a red wine or a white wine, it will tell you, ‘okay, you’re about to enjoy a very nice wine.’ If it’s a little heavy or has a slight aroma that is not pleasing to you it’s probably not a very good wine. You might call it the early warning system. If it smells good, then there’s taste and touch. It has to taste good. Have a nice flavor. And the touch: Is it too much tannin or acid, like lemon juice or is it too soft and flat and doesn’t leave your mouth feeling refreshed and balanced?

DJ: What is your connection to Arizona?

MM: I’ve enjoyed going to Arizona for years. The resorts they have are wonderful. I studied architecture at the university and I love Frank Lloyd Wright. In fact, one of the first dates that my wife and I ever had was to visit a Frank Lloyd Wright building: The Marin County Civic Center. As soon as I had the opportunity to go to the Arizona Biltmore designed by Frank Lloyd Wright again, I went there and enjoyed going back there. I’ve probably been there 30 or 40 times over the last 50 years.

DJ: Where in the world has been a favorite/unexpected winery you’ve visited?

MM: Sicily because I always felt that Sicily, at the very Southern tip of Italy—kind of between Italy and North Africa—would be far too warm for growing quality wines and grapes and I was wrong. They have indigenous grape varieties like Nero d’Avola, it makes a beautiful rich red wine that is enjoyable in warm climates. And I always thought you had to drink white wine or rosé in warm climates. I was really pleasantly surprised and impressed of not just the white wines, but also the red wines of Sicily.

DJ: What’s been your biggest wine splurge?

MM: Buying wine from my wife’s birth year and my birth year knowing that they weren’t going to be good beverages, because they were so old. During the ‘40s, I was born during World War II and my wife just after and therefore the wines of that era weren’t stellar either. But I wanted them just to have in my cellar. It was essentially buying some very expensive antique wines that we’d never drink and we just bought them for our ego.

All visiting chefs were positioned under tents adjacent to their individual grilling stations. At first glance, the grilling stations appeared to take the role of whimsical décor meant to add ambiance to the event. Upon a closer look, it was clear that each of the abstract structures were in fact various types of cooking stations, designed and crafted by Hudson Valley sculptor Kris Perry. From caldrons to fire pits, these chefs played with fire in a very Instagram-worthy way all day.

Prior to the event, the James Beard award-winner and Fish & Game chef Zak Pelaccio, who also launched the inaugural Play with Fire event in August 2014, said, “I’m super excited to spend the day cooking with this phenomenal group of chefs, working with Kris’s wildly unique cook sculptures, seeing old friends, making new friends, turning folks on to what’s happening in both Hudson and the greater Hudson Valley, and playing with fire!”

VIPs from the day included chefs Jess Shadbolt and Clare de Boer from King Restaurant; Nick Curtola from Four Horsemen; Ignacio Mattos from Estela, Cafe Altro Paradiso and Flora Bar; Victoria Blamey and  Seamus Mullen from Whirlybird + Greens, El Colmado; Negro Piattoni from Metta; and Sam Mason from Oddfellows. In addition, Elad Zvi and his staff from Broken Shaker and beverage director Yana Volfson of Cosme and ATLA spent their time behind the bar.

The playful finale of the night, a highlight for the pyros within us all, involved a twenty foot high bonfire coupled with spirited dancers accessorized with fire to finish off a long-winded day of indulging in food, drink and good company. The two-part summer soirée, held at Havens Beach, began in the morning with a brisk WPA-sanctioned paddle race and ended in the early evening with a sunset fête. The winners of the paddle race were celebrated at an awards ceremony that also toasted to the largest fundraisers at the event, Team SOS.

Event sponsor Lilly Pulitzer stayed true to the fashionable pink event with customized decorations including surfboards on display that definitely encouraged the summer theme. Hosted by Jill Martin, notable guests included Colin Cowie, Claire Florence, Christina Steinbrenner, Darcy Miller, Nicole Miller, David & Lisa Klein,and Shelly Brown. Attendees posed for photos in front of the wall of surf gear, and watched a designer hand-paint one of the surfboards throughout the evening.

President of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Myra Biblowit, went onstage to announce that the foundation will award $64 million to 300 scientists for breast cancer research. “Death rates from breast cancer have decreased by 40% since BCRF was founded 25 years ago and research is the reason,” she said. With $1.4 million raised over the weekend, the summer party was a success.

Now in Southampton Sweat’s fourth year, the certified yoga instructor, health coach, natural food chef, and fitness instructor (who also has a masters in clinical social work) has turned her passion for wellness into a bonafide experiential operation. “Five years ago, I have to say we were first to market,” Landon says about her foray into the fitness festival world. “But it was very obvious to me [that fitness] is a community, and a connection and energy people can bond over.” Upon witnessing Southampton’s own loyal community firsthand through the several Juice Press locations that are there, Landon knew this could be the perfect setting for people to burn a “Southampton Sweat.”

As for merging pop culture and fitness, Landon counts Christie Brinkley‘s daughter, Sailor, as a friend and fellow fitness-lover. After experiencing 2017’s festival, Sailor was eager to bring her mom to host the whole thing this year. “It’s all about the disrupters and game changers in fitness,” Landon says. “They all share an audience. There’s definitely this I’m part of this tribe or that tribe, but on this day, we come together as a collective.”

For the 2018 festival, fitness fanatics can enjoy pop-up workouts by New York’s most coveted studios including The Class by Taryn Toomey, AKT by Anna Kaiser, Mile High Run Club and Tonehouse. Top trainers will also be on-site to lead group classes, including Alex Silver Fagan and Akin Akman. “If you wanted, it could be five straight hours of NYC’s toughest workouts,” Landon says. Although for those seeking a more voyeuristic experience, she says, “if you want to just come and hangout, it’s the best people-watching place.”
