The store opens with Virginie Viard’s spring/summer ready-to-wear collection, inspired by freedom, movement and the seaside gardens of Villa Noailles, a modernist home in Hyères, France, designed by the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1929. Lightweight tweed and neoprene suiting, striped terry cloth jackets, swimsuits, lace dresses and trousers and transparent organza separates made for layering. “I tried to bring one thing and its opposite together in the coolest way possible,” says Viard. “And the gardens and swimming pool of the villa Noailles, that exceptional setting, lend themselves to that rather well.”

The bed features 400 thread count Frette sheets, and the 5-fixture bathroom includes a soaking tub with water that comes from the ceiling and a beautiful walk-in shower, outfitted with a lineup of hand-selected Le Labo products. This room is seamlessly stylish, and is truly a special space for guests.

We offer personal amenities that really speak to our guests on an individual basis. For example, we once had a stamp collector staying on property, so our team sent a cake with a Swexan stamp on top of it for him to enjoy. Our amenities and special perks are truly endless and very customizable.

What’s your personal favorite room? Why?

My personal favorite room is the Grand Swexan suite. While all of our suites are unique and special in their own way, this room encompasses the real blend of Swiss and Texan charm which really represents who we are. The Chamois mountain goat and the Longhorn cowhide are just two examples of hints to the Texas Swiss identity.

What’s your favorite design element on property?

Every part of the hotel tells a different story, from the opulent events space with Corinthian pillars to the playroom of the hotel, Babou’s, with its catprint carpet.

What is another fun fact about the property?

There are exactly 26 public bathrooms on the property. Each bathroom is completely different and has its own identity. The designer, Melinda Clark, was encouraged to be creative, and create bathrooms that would grab the guests attention with loud and eccentric statements, such as tiled walls and floors, creative light fixtures and golden urinals.

Located in the Renaissance Hotel Saint Elm, Toussaint Brasserie is now open from Dallas-based owner and creator John Kirtland. The ingredient-driven menu features French staples such as moules frites, steak tartare, poulet roti and lobster thermidor. “We’ve created a modern interpretation of the French brasserie cuisine that adorned Paris, New Orleans and Vietnam at the turn of the century and pays homage to the traditional cooking of these famed culinary destinations,” says Kirtland. Complementing the food menu, a robust cocktail and wine menu is on offer. Designed by Droese Raney (José, Mirador and Park House), the wood and marble 3,200-square-foot space in a palette of blue, gray and caramel speaks to the traditional brasseries of Paris and New Orleans. “We created Toussaint as a place we’d actually like to visit with friends, for date night or pop in for a quick lunch ourselves. It’ll offer Dallas and visitors alike a spirited downtown destination for French comfort food made with high-quality ingredients, a lively soundtrack and well-crafted cocktails in a comfortable setting,” says Kirtland.

When guests walk into the thoughtfully designed, newly opened Nuri Grill in Koreatown, which features interactive grills at each table, they will feel transported. Wan Kim, a native Korean and current Dallas resident, was inspired by his lifelong passion for food and business. Kim tasked Minji Kim, a Michelin-recognized Korean chef, and her lead chef and husband, Ben Lee, with creating a menu that allows Dallas residents to sample superior Korean-inspired cuisine in a relaxed setting. The menu uses high-quality ingredients and adds an elevated twist to traditional Asian-American foods such as kimchi fried rice, Korean-style short rib and hand-breaded sweet chicken. The experiential aspect of the 4,000-square-foot restaurant starts at the tables. The space seats 108 people and aims to bring its guests together as they savor new flavors and experiences. Each table has a grill in the middle that can be used by the servers to prepare the premium meats while diners watch in awe, or guests can choose to cook their own food for an even more interactive meal. Nuri Grill brings an intimate dining experience laced with culinary adventure to Dallas for the ultimate meal.

SusieCakes bakery has opened its third location in East Dallas’ historic Hillside Village shopping center. Peter Halley’s Cell Grids at the Dallas Contemporary explores a unique series of paintings he created from 2015 to the present. Marking his first Texas exhibition in over 15 years, the presentation highlights these works, which feature brightly colored rectilinear cells arranged into large-scale syncopated grids. The collection of 18 paintings, on display through February 13, treads a subtle line between purist modernist abstraction and post-modern referentiality, creating yet another level of tension and ambiguity.

Following a process of dedication, innovation and patience, the Bottled-in-Bond rule dates back to 1897, when Congress first provided the regulations. A product achieves the label only when the alcohol is produced by one master distiller at one distillery within one season. Additionally, the alcohol must be aged in charred oak barrels for at least four years and bottled at 100 proof in the United States.

What to Do

A reimagined Fort Worth Food + Wine Festival will feature 20 specialty pop-up dinners throughout April hosted at open-air destination The Shops at Clearfork. Forty at the ’Fork will present a carefully curated selection of 40 local chefs who will pair up to create collaborative menus for each dinner. Wine pairing suggestions will be provided by Fort Worth locals Chris Keel, owner of Put a Cork in It, and Richard King, co-owner of Ellerbe Fine Foods. Originally built in 1914 by architect Ludwig Bernhart Weinman, the Isis Theatre in Fort Worth was a legendary destination for entertainment with 950 seats and the largest screen in the city at the time. The historic cultural outpost is not only being restored to its former glory, it is being given a bit of a facelift, too. The new Isis Theatre will reopen as a cinema during the day and screen classic Western films at night. It will also host live performances at night with a speakeasy aesthetic.

Inspired by the mixtapes of the 1980s and 1990s, Nasher Mixtape at the Nasher Sculpture Center is a celebration of the museum’s collection. The spring/summer series of exhibitions focuses on the permanent collections but also showcases micro-exhibitions. Each gallery or grouping has a specific point of view, inspiration and story. Nasher Mixtape offers a range of groupings of art, including one called “Into the Garden” that welcomes visitors into the sculpture garden for a nature-inspired installation. The space that once housed Bolsa has been reimagined and transformed into Encina. Inspired by the Oak Cliff neighborhood and the space’s beloved quirky personality, the duo updated the interior’s look and feel with their own twist. “I’ve spent many years in this building and am incredibly proud to bring my version of a neighborhood restaurant to the beloved and revitalized space,” says Balke. “There is a lot of history here. Designed by African American architect William Sidney Pittman in 1916, the new Kimpton Pittman Hotel is sure to become a fixture in the Deep Ellum neighborhood, where vibrant street murals and lush gardens coexist. “Architects Perkins+Will and designers at Busta Studio worked in tandem with the Dallas Historical Society to preserve the building’s original features and tie in the history of the space through meaningful design elements,” says the hotel’s general manager, Jack Murray. “We wanted to create a sort of romantic juxtaposition with the restoration of the historic landmark coupled with a new, contemporary tower.” The loft-like, industrial common spaces feature exposed steel, raw concrete and natural leather against simple white walls. The Elm & Good restaurant and the pool deck venues are sure to become popular with hotel guests and locals alike. Guests can expect a menu that emphasizes locally sourced ingredients and vegetable-forward dishes set to live music and great cocktails. “We’re hoping to be a place that encourages community, with a mix of local and out-of-town guests,” says Murray.

She eschews synthetics like spandex and aims for zero waste, donating leftover textiles to quilting guilds or crafting them into accessories. Conscious of animal welfare, Orr uses pineapple “leather” instead of animal skins and plans on experimenting with a new textile made of cactus. She crafts felt hats with locally sourced wool that has been hand sheared to avoid wounding the sheep. “Every collection, we try to be more and more sustainable,” says the designer.

“As actors, we were always complaining about the playwrights, which was ridiculous and typical, and my friend said, ‘Why don’t you write one for us?’” he recalls.

The musical wound up in FringeNYC, and Hackler graduated into a multifaceted career as an actor, director, playwright, tenured faculty member at Southern Methodist University, and codirector of the Yale Summer Conservatory. The artist swears he is slowing down (“I’m actively trying to do less,” he says), but not before Second Thought Theatre and Circle Theatre copremiere his latest play, What We Were, August 28 to September 21 at Bryant Hall.

Hackler’s plays explore modern ills, from loneliness to divisive politics, and What We Were is no different. The story centers on the reunion of three sisters who were sexually abused as children. It was loosely inspired by the true tale of Treva Throneberry, a Texan who posed as an abandoned teenager in town after town for more than a decade. Even after she was arrested for fraud, Throneberry asserted she was 16 in depositions, Hackler points out.

“What would have to happen to make someone disassociate that way and want to relive those years over and over again?” he reflects. As he was writing it, however, he shifted focus from the troubled charlatan to a tribute to sisterhood. “I don’t have siblings, but my entire life I’ve observed the relationship between my mother and her two sisters,” Hackler explains. “Even though the story in the play is not their story at all, I wanted to honor that spirit, that level of family.”

He’s also working on a commission for Dallas’ Undermain Theatre, where he is a company member. It’s a reimagining of Ibsen’s Brand as a meditation on the intersection of politics and faith. Stay tuned.

Murphree Tran, whose family was wealthy in Vietnam, bears them no ill will. “We were such a burden to Malaysia and Thailand,” she says. “They didn’t want us to land. I have so much understanding for the Syrians and all these Latin countries. Nobody really wants to leave and risk their lives, but…nobody wants these people.” Her boat was relatively lucky. It was one of the first to wash up on Kuku, an uninhabited Indonesian beach that became a notorious refugee camp. They lived a “bare minimum” existence for nearly a year before coming to Dallas “with nothing but the clothes on our backs” to make a new life with family members.

Murphree Tran, whose grandmother sold an herbal balm across Southeast Asia, has entrepreneurialism in her blood. She started her first business, an upscale preschool chain that she later sold, by borrowing her parents’ life savings and then some. Her latest venture is Verbena Parlor + Social House. Located in the bustling Uptown neighborhood, the unusual combination nail salon, café, and party spot was inspired by her own desire for a pleasant hangout.

“I wanted a place that was very accommodating for everybody, where you could have premium coffee, wine, and beer, and get together, laugh, and have a good time, and also get a treatment, too,” she says. She took special care to offer nontoxic nail polishes, install a premium ventilation system to extract fumes, and stock organic lotions and balms. “I’m very health conscious, and the whole idea is that it’s good for you,” she says.

Lasting Impressions

The late Margaret and Eugene McDermott, she a philanthropist and he a founder of Texas Instruments, powered the Dallas Museum of Art—and the city—forward throughout their lives. Margaret’s passing in May brought another gift: 32 artworks by Monet, Degas, Munch, Picasso, Braque, O’Keefe and more, including  Munch’s “Thuringian Forest,” Monet’s “The Water Lily Pond” and Degas’ “Dancer with a Fan.”

“An Enduring Legacy: The Eugene and Margaret McDermott Collection of Impressionist and Modern Art” will be up through February 17.

Zaytinya has made The Star in Frisco—a 91-acre development anchored by the Dallas Cowboys headquarters—an unlikely foodie destination. Like its Washington, DC sister restaurant, Zaytinya’s inventive menu draws from Turkish, Greek and Lebanese fare as interpreted by star chef José Andrés and his team at ThinkFoodGroup.

Think marinated roasted red peppers with feta and thyme, Mediterranean octopus over yellow split pea puree and roasted lamb phyllo pie. The small “mezze” plates build on Andrés’ deep knowledge of Mediterranean cooking and years of research and travel. Go for the Chef’s Experience, a smorgasbord of veggie, seafood, meat and dessert plates, each harboring a symphony of flavors. It’s a steal for $65.

Zaytinya is the first Texas venture for the Michelin-starred chef and James Beard Foundation 2018 Humanitarian of the Year. Andrés landed in Puerto Rico five days after Hurricane Maria and began cooking, establishing a network that served more than 3.5 million meals—more than any other aid group.

“We are trailblazers,” Sampson says. “We work with a staff and a board that has a healthy appetite for taking smart and strategic risk.”

She’s not kidding. C-suite executives from AT&T, Frito-Lay and Toyota North America all sit on the nonprofit’s high-powered board.

Each United Way chapter operates independently, and Sampson has taken the Dallas agency well beyond the organization’s standard employee-giving fundraising and community grants. One new initiative is the GroundFloor program to nurture promising social ventures. It is responsible for several meaningful successes, such as Cafe Momentum, led by a professional chef and staffed entirely with released young offenders.

Sampson’s impact will be felt for decades via a $100 million endowment drive that launched in 2015 and is already at $56 million. That fund is separate from the annual campaign, which topped $61 million this year and was led by legendary former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman. A native of nearby Arlington, Sampson was an auditor at Arthur Andersen before joining United Way of Metropolitan Dallas in 2001 as senior vice president and chief financial officer. She rose to chief operating officer in 2004 and CEO and president in 2011.

Along the way, she abandoned the dark suits and sensible shoes of an accountant, embracing sculptural ready-to-wear and custom fashions by Dallas designer Tish Cox. “I’ve become more confident in my own skin and my personal style reflects that,” she says. “One of my guiding principles in life—and in fashion—is to live faithfully to your authentic self.”

For starters, she seems to exist on little to no sleep, yet she looks perfectly put-together, 100 percent of the time. She travels the globe on a weekly basis, yet somehow still manages to drop off her three children at school in the morning before she boards her flight.

It should come as no surprise that this entrepreneur is continuing to reel in success with her $100 million company Beauty Bioscience and its star product, the GloPro microneedling tool, the $199 at-home device designed to stimulate collagen and elastin production. “The most important attribute for success is your ability to get back up, learn from your mistakes, be open to constructive criticism, and persevere,” O’Banion says of her well-earned success. “I have fallen more times than I can count but the only number worth recording is the number of times you get back up.”

This summer, her empire will continue to grow with the launch of a new lip serum called The Pout, a natural at-home alternative to lip injections. “One use and you will be hooked—the most perfect pouty lips in seconds,” she says. In addition, the brand will launch a rose quartz contouring roller in July—and there’s already a lengthy waitlist for it. “We all keep one at our desks at work and are seriously obsessed.”

Indeed, as CEO of Hard Night Good Morning skincare, she’s fought against her fair share of questionable ethics. “In the beginning, some of the bigger labs might not have talked to you because you’re a woman,” recalls Simmons. “Most of the people I deal with are men. And they may think, ‘Oh you’re just a woman.’ But I think we’ve been here long enough now that we’ve proven ourselves.”

Whether she’s persevering in the face of patriarchy or developing skincare responsibly, Simmons doesn’t turn the other cheek when it comes to ethics. Launched in 2008, Hard Night Good Morning is vegan and cruelty-free, utilizing wellness secrets developed by her mother Dee, a cancer survivor and matriarch of the line’s parent company Ultimate Living.

Despite Simmons’s family tree of entrepreneurs (her father and uncle were the legendary corporate raiders Glenn and Harold Simmons) her path to business wasn’t linear. After studying political science at Sweet Briar College, she moved to L.A. to give acting a try. But her mother’s cancer diagnosis in 1987 set her on a new course. “I went along with her around the world to meet with nutritionists and herbalists,” she says. “We went to Tijuana to get all these detox infusions and IVs.” But as Ultimate Living grew, so did tensions between mother and daughter. “Because of our strong personalities, I’d work for her for a little bit and then be like, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’”

Simmons’s form of rebellion was to move to Washington, D.C., as an employee of George W. Bush’s Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management. While she was eventually offered a role as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency, Dee ultimately proved less volatile than nuclear waste management. “My mother said, ‘You’re never going to have another chance to have your own business,’ so I came home.”

But these days, Simmons is politically engaged as ever. “The best thing about Housewives is that it’s allowed me to give my causes a much bigger platform,” says Simmons, a UNICEF board member and ambassador for Glenn Beck’s Nazarene Fund. And with a resumé like hers, there’s no Housewives mess Simmons isn’t equipped to handle. “I went to a women’s college,” she says. “When Brandy put a dildo in my bag, I didn’t bat an eyelash.”

A dish at Rapscallion

As its name suggests, Lowest Greenville’s Rapscallion—a collaboration among siblings Brooks and Bradley Anderson and chef Nathan Tate (also the trio behind the Bishop Arts bistro Boulevardier)—doesn’t play by the rules. Tate and chef de cuisine Jonathan Peters mix up down-home cooking with unexpected modern touches for dishes including Nashville-style hot chicken smothered with Szechuan mala sauce; a grass-fed burger with three-cheese pimiento, house pepper bacon, creole mustard and spiced sweet-potato chips; and coriander-cured yellowtail with green tomato, corn bread and scallion oil. There’s also a raw bar, packed with a rotating list of oysters and other seafood specialties.

Just as the dinner menu uses select products from Tate’s family farm, the libations stick close to home with a list of all-American wine and beer as well as an ever-changing array of cocktails. In fact, it’s those beverages that helped earn the eatery its name. “Lowest Greenville is famous for being a bit of a boozy entertainment district full of rapscallions,” Brooks Anderson says, “so it all just worked.”

Matt McCallister’s Filament is all about Southern roots. The menu at the Deep Ellum eatery highlights the diversity of the region’s cuisine, something McCallister knows plenty about. “I grew up eating a lot of preparations my mom drew from the cooking of her grandmother,” he says. So thank his forebearers for dishes like fried sepia tacos with green papaya slaw and a hot catfish sandwich on Pullman bread. Café Momentum

Café Momentum
Six years ago, Chad Houser visited a Dallas County juvenile-detention facility and taught eight young men to make ice cream for a competition at the Dallas Farmers Market. Three years later, he left his job and began pursuing Café Momentum, a restaurant that offers post-release paid internships for juvenile offenders. The program now has a full-time brick-and-mortar home, and during a 12-month period, the young men work through five stations in the restaurant, each with an attached curriculum that covers basic culinary duties along with applicable life skills. 

“So many important lessons can be learned in washing dishes, waiting tables and everything else in between,” says Houser. There are nearly 6,500 kids who enter the Dallas County juvenile system every year, and Houser says, “I hope we build enough restaurants to work with all of them.”

Wang sees the new space as “a salon in the couture tradition, which encapsulates all of the symbols of the new design concept.” For a contemporary store, it’s got something of an old soul. “I’m inspired by its sense of intimacy and how all of the contrasting materials come together to link history and future in a beautiful way,” he says.
