Kelly Rowland Talks A Good Game

The former Destiny’s Child star explains her stunning new look (and why she’s distancing herself from Beyoncé and Michelle)

As she gears up for the launch of her fourth solo album, Talk a Good Game (Universal Republic), which will be released on June 4th, Kelly Rowland is making a concerted effort to keep the coordinating Tina Knowles-designed ensembles Destiny’s Child was famous for wearing (and even the black leather leotards from the group’s surprise Super Bowl halftime show reunion) in the past. Rowland’s style of late has veered more towards elegance than a flashy team effort – we’re thinking of the stunning black-and-white Donna Karan gown she wore when hosting the Oscar’s pre-show, for example, or the similarly monochromatic look she was wearing on Thursday night at the Courvoisiology Lab Event Series kick-off party at SIR Stage 37 in New York.

Dressed for her performance in white Rachel Zoe pants, YSL shoes and a black Wolford top – slightly unbuttoned to reveal her lacy La Perla bra; Rowland has clearly found a look that she loves. “For a while, I was probably searching for my own style, since I was with the girls for so long,” the Kisses Down Low” singer told DuJour before the show; which included a preview of her upcoming album, memorable Destiny’s Child favorites (like “Say My Name” and “Bootylicious”), and her break-out solo hit from 2002, “Dilemma.”

“Doing me has been the best thing that I could do,” Rowland said, “as far as embracing who I am as a woman and an individual – away from Beyoncé and Michelle.” And with wisdom to match her refined appearance, she concluded with the trite and true: “I think it’s very important that you wear the clothes, not let the clothes wear you.” Now those are some words to live by.
