“For a long time, I resisted making any kind of album because I didn’t know what my personal sound would be,” Megan Hilty says. It’s something the actress, a Broadway veteran and star of NBC’s Smash, has obviously figured out.
Hilty’s debut album, It Happens All The Time, is a 10-track stunner that shows off not only her impressive pipes but also her ability to break way from the Broadway-baby songs that have made her famous; the record features tracks penned by artists as varied as Ne-Yo and Carrie Underwood.
“I totally understand that I’m not going to please everyone, but the most important thing to me is to create something I believe in,” Hilty says. “And this is just me—no character, no story.”
With that in mind, Hilty answers the DuJour Questionnaire.
What was the best day of your life?
I’m going to say my birthday last year. It’s the day I met my boyfriend, and he completely changed my life.
The worst?
The day I lost my dog for about four hours. She got out from my backyard and disappeared. That was probably the worst experience I’ve ever had. She was a mile away and made it through five major intersections without a scratch. It was terrifying.
If you could spend a day in someone else’s shoes, who would it be?
Michelle Obama.
What’s your favorite hour of the day?
Whenever it is that I come home to my dogs—I have two Jack Russell terriers. It’s different every day.
If you could relive any day in history, what would it be?
I’d want to be at Woodstock.
Did you break a sweat today?
A little bit. I did an interview while I was walking on a treadmill. I wasn’t walking fast, but the lights were super hot and I was wearing a leather jacket.
If you wore a uniform every day, what would it be?
Whatever it was, it would have to include heels.

I didn’t want to sit on a stool when I performed on The View this morning, but I did. I was told it would be better.
What was the best conversation you had today?
I got to talk to Cesar Millan this morning and he gave me great advice on how to deal with my dogs.
How would you spend your last day on Earth?
Walking in Central Park with my dogs and my boyfriend.
