A Slice of Singapore in the Big Apple

The exhibition that took New York City by storm

The Singapore: Inside Out exhibition is currently traveling the globe, with stops in the media capitals of the world—Beijing, London, New York City and it will soon have its grand homecoming in none other than its eponymous city. But the NYC stop was the biggest project of the tour. It was set up in just four days, with an intricate lattice scaffolding sitting right in Madison Square Park.

Celebrating 50 years of being an independent nation, a variety of contemporary artists showcase what life is like in Singapore through all creative fields. Randy Chan, curator and award-winning Singaporean architect, designed the exhibition in such a way that each admirer could create his or her own adventure.

“The experience should reflect the condition of this contradictory city we live in,” says Chan, “where everything is in a perpetual state of construction and where the notion of identity is constantly ‘renovated’. The paradoxes of a fluid nation-island-city-state present an opportunity upon which the Creatives are invited to collaborate on works that reimagine the construct of a Singapore we are both familiar and unfamiliar with.”

With no definite landscape, visitors are free to roam around the exhibition and engage with each experience, from edible art to theatrical displays and live concerts.
