The SUV For Real Life

The 2027 Infiniti QX80 Sport brings a little more luxury to the everyday business of family life

The drive to the airport to pick up my boys from sleepaway camp is never simply a drive. Being away from them never gets easier, but the ride home always makes it worthwhile. This year, that journey came with an especially comfortable companion: the 2027 Infiniti QX80 Sport, and, it proved remarkably well suited to the realities of family life, combining generous space with thoughtful technology and the sort of quiet luxuries that make a long drive feel considerably more civilized.

Camp pickup is its own particular form of chaos. Duffel bags somehow seem twice the size they were at drop-off, along with sleeping bags, laundry and a collection of art projects whose origins are best left unexplored. The airport pickup lane can be equally hectic, but the QX80’s available camera views made navigating traffic and pulling up to the curb easier. Its ample cargo space swallowed everything with room to spare, while the available air suspension lowered the rear of the SUV for easier loading — a particularly welcome feature when the cargo is essentially a season’s worth of camp life. Once everyone was settled into the second row, the boys were sunburned, tired and talking at full speed. Tri-zone climate control allowed everyone to find their preferred temperature while Biometric Cooling sensed where passengers were sitting and directed cool air accordingly. On a 90-degree afternoon, it was one of those seemingly small details that quickly became indispensable.

The same could be said for the abundance of charging options. USB-C ports throughout the cabin and a 120V outlet kept phones and other devices powered for the trip home and the weekend ahead. In a family car, these are hardly frivolous extras. They are the infrastructure of modern life. But it was on the highway that the QX80 truly won me over. After two hours of waiting at pickup, the massaging front seats were a welcome indulgence. ProPILOT Assist 2.1 helped ease the strain of stop-and-go traffic, leaving me more relaxed and able to concentrate on the conversation unfolding in the cabin.

The entertainment system was equally impressive. A 24-speaker Klipsch Reference Premiere audio system with an 8-inch subwoofer transformed the camp playlist into something approaching a private concert. Individual Audio allowed me to hear navigation directions from my seat without interrupting the boys’ music or their increasingly elaborate stories. Meanwhile, 64 colors of ambient lighting gave the cabin a calm, considered atmosphere as the afternoon turned to evening.

By the time we pulled into the driveway, the sun was setting, catching the QX80 Sport’s sculpted lines and dark chrome trim. After a long day of airport traffic, oversized duffel bags and the particular exhaustion of family logistics, the drive had somehow felt less like an errand and more like part of the experience. That may be the greatest luxury of all. The best luxury doesn’t necessarily take you away from everyday life. It makes everyday life feel a little more exceptional. The QX80 Sport does just that, bringing comfort, technology and a sense of calm to the miles that make up family life.
