Room Request! Grand Hotel Tremezzo

See inside Lake Como’s premier waterfront resort destination

Lake Como has been the setting for many contemporary films over the years—Ocean’s TwelveOcean’s ThirteenStar Wars: Episode II and Casino Royale, to name a few—and for good reason. The shockingly beautiful surroundings play host to jet-setters and celebrities alike. It is, after all, where George Clooney famously owns a vacation home.

The best resort in the area is the family-owned Grand Hotel Tremezzo on the shores of Lake Como facing the town of Bellagio, where two branches of the lake meet. Its facilities include three pools, a clay tennis court and various public rooms off the lobby strewn with plush, candy-colored sofas. The new, 1000-square-meter T Spa, designed by architect Ruggero Venelli in partnership with ESPA, offers classic spa treatments, a panoramic relaxation lounge and a marble hammam.

Its 76 recently refreshed rooms and 14 luxurious suites feature sumptuous fabrics, colorful period furniture and marble bathrooms. Dining options range from high-end cuisine (now overseen by famed Milanese chef Gualtiero Marchesi) to a casual beachfront bistro.

Below, the hotel’s owner, Valentina DeSantis, tells DuJour about the most sought-after suite on the property.

The most requested room:
The two Rooftop Front Suites: Balbianello and Bellagio.

What makes it so special:
Belonging to a historical property, they are a perfect blend of classic style and modern features: you don’t miss to breathe the historical aristocratic charm that is unique of Lake Como at the same time enjoying special amenities like a private outdoor heated Jacuzzi mini-pool on your private panoramic terrace overlooking Bellagio or Balbianello point! The huge panoramic window of the living room shows the best views of the hotel from the top floor, and just entering the suites takes your breath away.

Your personal favorite:
Suite Maria, the most tender, delicate gem in our collection of Historical Suites and an elegant tribute to everyone in love.

Because…
It is dedicated to my Grandmother Maria, and thus it is so special to me. Charm and tenderness abound in this magnificent fourth-floor suite, where the atmosphere is both traditional and romantic, as light as a tulle veil. In the center of the bedroom stands a romantic four-poster bed looking out over the lake, filling your eyes with every shade of blue the moment you awake.

Fun fact:
The hotel opened in 1910 with a party and what followed until the outbreak of World War I was great splendor. For over a year during World War I, the hotel was requisitioned for use as a military hospital. In the 1930s, Grand Hotel Tremezzo was bought by the Sampietro family and throughout the terrible years of the Second World War, the hotel remained open and when the war ended it was ready to welcome with its customary grace.
