The Park Hyatt Tokyo is widely recognized for its role in Sofia Coppola‘s Academy Award-winning drama Lost in Translation: At the hotel, Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) cross paths while traveling in Japan and form an unexpected bond. It’s not surprising that the property, which occupies the top 14 floors of Shinjuku Park Tower, was chosen as the backdrop for the 2003 film. The Park Hyatt boasts world-class restaurants and spectacular views from each of its 177 guest rooms. But which room is requested by its guests most often? We asked the hotel’s general manager, Philippe Roux-Dessarps, for the inside scoop.
Most requested room in the hotel:
“Our most regularly requested rooms are the ones with views of Mt. Fuji. With unobstructed views over the Kanto Plains to Tokyo’s west, we enjoy breathtaking views of Japan’s most revered mountain for more than half the year—the best views are during winter, when the air is crisp and clear. Aside from a preference for mountain views, our Park View Rooms are the most requested.”

What makes it special:
“The Park View Rooms are situated on the corner of the hotel, letting guests enjoy expansive views in two directions. For a room in the southwest corner, that means vistas out toward Mt. Fuji from the bedroom, and city views of Shibuya and Yoyogi Park from the deep soaking tub in the bathroom. Not only is this room popular with guests, it’s actually the favourite room of our hotel’s interior designer, John Morford.”

Your personal favorite:
“I am quite fond of the Park View Room, but if I had to choose another room I like, I would have to say the Tokyo Suite. “
Because…
“The stylishly contemporary interior is a reflection, of sorts, of the bustling Tokyo metropolis seen from the lounge room’s bay window. It has a certain warmth to it, with over a thousand books, a baby-grand piano and a selection of original artwork and sculptures. It feels more like a luxurious high-rise apartment to me than a hotel room.”
Celebrity guests:
“We have been graced by the presence of many performers, musicians and artists. Something about the hotel attracts the creative types.”
The rate:
“Park View Rooms average around $550 per night. The Tokyo Suite averages around $8,000 – $10,000 per night.”
Fun fact:
“Many fans of the hotel are very much aware that Sophia Coppola’s Lost in Translation was filmed here, but are surprised to know that it was done in less than a month, filming in the early hours of the morning when guests were not around. We often get requests to stay in Bob or Charlotte’s room, but they are in fact one and the same, having been shot in one of our larger suites.”
