How Charlotte Tilbury Created a Miracle in a Jar

As the first anniversary of her cosmetics line approaches, the makeup artist talks to DuJour about her biggest success to date

Until she launched her eponymous line last year, British makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury had to personally mix up batches of the product that would go on to become her Magic Cream for fashion shows, film sets and celebrity clients like Kate Moss, Amal Clooney and Penelope Cruz. When she was finally ready to launch the Magic Cream as part of her brand, it sold out in the U.S. in seven minutes.

Here, the impossibly cool beauty pro breaks down just what makes her Magic Cream, well, magic.

Why is moisturizer so important?

You can’t have a beautiful painting without a beautiful canvas. It’s important that you look after your skin properly, and having a good moisturizer is essential for this. Hydrated, well-moisturized skin will also help your makeup to last much longer.

How has your Magic Cream been a game changer for you?

My Magic Cream has a miracle-working effect, which creates the perfect base for a makeup look—I call it a push-up bra in a jar. It instantly turns around tired, dull, dehydrated skin and is packed with a secret mix of ingredients that I’ve been blending together for years. I’m well known for creating gorgeous, luminous skin and my Magic Cream is essential for this. I never start makeup without it!

What did you do before you created it?

Before I started my brand, I was mixing this backstage for 20 years and it became a favorite of models, celebrities, editors, photographers and designers. It actually named itself—everyone was asking for my little pot of magic cream!

Without giving away your secret recipe, what are the key ingredients?

It is packed with active ingredients like Bio Nymph Peptide Complex, hyaluronic acid, Camellia & Rosehip Oil, Damask Rose water and Vitamins A, C & E which flood the skin with moisture for a dewy, plump finish.
