Joey Silvestera opened the East Village flagship of his salon Blackstones in 2007. The former taxidermist built a stable of clients—heavy on actors, artists, musicians and designers—thanks in part to his shop’s old-world appeal (the walls are festooned with his own animal handiwork) as well as his top-notch team of stylists and his line of locally made products sold under the name Five Wits. Now, Silvestera is branching out with a new Blackstones outpost in the Roxy Hotel in Tribeca.
To hear Silvestera tell it, the new space already feels like home. “Tribeca is an amazing neighborhood, and we’re now happily situated downtown on both the East and West sides [of Manhattan],” he tells DuJour. “The Roxy has just gone through a transformation, with a cultural expansion that incorporates film and music. We’re in great company with neighbors including Paul Sevigny’s bar, Paul’s Baby Grand, and Jack’s Stir-Brew Coffee.”
The new shop, which features Parisian décor and a distinctly Continental feel, offers services including haircuts, color and blowouts and represents the next stage in the brand’s development. “Building products to support our color and styling aesthetics is our next big push, and we’re now in development for a full hair care line that will launch later this year,” Silvestera says. “It’s about sharing who and what we are on a larger scope, and the opening in the Roxy is an important part of this.”
As for whether East Village types will make the trip to Tribeca to indulge in Blackstone’s latest offering, Silvestera seems confident they will. I have a feeling it will be very similar [clientele,]” he says. “Blackstones has become a destination and we have clients coming from all over the city. Now we just have more seats—and hopefully it will be easier to get an appointment.”
