Kate Hudson, Kids & Anti-Mommy Style

On the eve of Mother’s Day, the actress and face of Ann Taylor talks upcoming family vacations and the one wardrobe piece she never packs

“I don’t necessarily believe in mommy style,” confesses Kate Hudson. “Your kids don’t change your style.” The award-winning actress is mom to two youngsters, Bingham and Ryder—which means there’s usually a brigade of baby-obsessed paparazzi snapping her off-duty style, kids in tow. On duty, though, Hudson’s been in front of the camera as the face of Ann Taylor since 2012.

It’s a role that suits Hudson well, thanks to her commitment to comfortable, unfussy pieces in her own wardrobe—whether she’s hosting Mother’s Day at her home in Los Angeles like this weekend or hitting the road this summer for a European family vacation and to film Rock the Kasbah in Morocco with co-stars Bill Murray, Bruce Willis and Zooey Deschanel.

So what pieces will make the cut in Hudson’s summer suitcase? “Anything that fits in a ball” she laughs, explaining her penchant for tees to scarves. “Every time I overpack, I realize I end up wearing the same stuff,” says Hudson of her staples, which include bikinis, flowy dresses and lightweight knits from Ann Taylor. And when it comes down to accessories, look for plenty of pieces accentuated with turquoise and tiger’s eye—stones Hudson covets both for their colors and protective energies.

And what’s the one new piece that will make its way into her suitcase this summer? “Jeans,” confesses Hudson. “I never bring them, but I’ll be doing camel rides, so I’ll pack two pairs.”
