Karats and Cream

Designer Anna Sheffield’s new jewelry inspired collaboration with Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream is just as heavenly as it sounds

There’s a lot more than coffee brewing in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. New York City-based jewelry designer Anna Sheffield has teamed up with Nicholas Morgenstern, the mastermind behind Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream, to produce a creamy treat that evokes Sheffield’s sparkling collection. Morgenstern, who also co-owns El Rey Coffee Bar & Luncheonette, met Sheffield when their businesses opened up downtown last year. Upon tasting El Rey Head Chef Gerardo Gonzales’ cuisine, Sheffield knew he was the perfect person to make her dream of a jewel-themed edible indulgence a reality.

Together the trio created Rosette, the latest addition to the bold Morgenstern’s lineup, which boasts intriguing combinations, like Szechuan peppercorn chocolate and banana curry. The group began talking about this flavor in August when they prepared a dinner for 30 of their closest industry friends. Rosette, a sweet and tart blend of prickly pear and Greek yogurt, is served with a rim of candied black sesame seeds to emulate rose gold and black diamond pavé, Sheffield’s signature color story. Prickly pear, prominent in Mexican and Southwestern cuisine, was selected to represent Sheffield’s desert-inspired aesthetic.

“You really see the childlike wonder that comes out in everybody who has tried the flavor,” says Sheffield. “Ordering an ice cream scoop is just something that makes you feel seven all over again.”

You can taste Rosette exclusively at 2 Rivington Street until December 1st.
