Listen to LANY’s Heartbreak

“Thru These Tears,” the first single off the band’s upcoming album Malibu Nights, gets emotional

The Los Angeles-based indie pop trio LANY first really captured our hearts–and ears–with their romantic banger “ILYSB” in 2014 followed by their 2016 hit “Where The Hell Are My Friends.”

Since LANY’s 2017 self-titled debut album, listeners have become totally drawn to frontman Paul Jason Klein’s cool-guy vibe, complete with a heart-melting falsetto. From performing at Governors Ball for the first time this summer to upcoming shows at Lollapalooza and Osheaga Festival, the band has been busy bringing their infectious sound to stages across the globe. Klein tells me that over the past year, the band has grown and these changes can be expected to be heard on their upcoming sophomore album, Malibu Nights. “The beauty of being a band is the evolution. We place a high priority on our albums. We don’t want to make the same album but it’ll still feel so LANY,” he explains.

The first single off Malibu Nights, “Thru These Tears,” was recently released and offers a similar musical style that LANY listeners love, but there is a much more vulnerable side to Klein on display. On writing Malibu Nights, Klein says, “I was going through human experiences like heartbreak and being blindsided by something you didn’t know would happen. Just the aftermath of heartbreak.” The singer adds that the past five months of writing Malibu Nights were emotionally challenging. “The band has been so generous in allowing me to write from my own personal experience,” he adds, looking to his bandmates Jake Goss and Les Priest.

“Thru These Tears” is an impassioned introduction to the band’s upcoming album with Klein’s typically dreamy romance-centric lyrics replaced with a raw and realistic storyline. Delicately retracing a breakup and finally admitting, “In the end I’m gonna be alright” Klein assures listeners that Malibu Nights will be nothing short of “LANY.”
