Feast Your Eyes on the World’s Sleekest Spacesuit

Y-3 and Virgin Galactic team up on high-fashion space apparel

The future pilots of Virgin Galactic have a stylish new getup. That’s because the commercial spaceline—currently in development to bring tourists into space for $250,000 a head—teamed up with Y-3, a longstanding collaboration with Japanese design guru Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas, to create high-tech, futuristic flight suits and boots.

From the looks of it, the all-black uniform (made from fire-resistant Nomex materials) is seriously sleek— and actually rather comfortable, according to Adam Well, Head of Design at Virgin Galactic.

“Our evolution into a fully-functioning spaceline presents unprecedented opportunities to create original designs in support of our unique customer experience,” says Wells in a release. “Together with the incredibly talented team at Y-3, we will explore the potential to create innovative apparel and accessories—both for our staff and for our pioneering customers—that is appropriately functional and fit-for-purpose, is thoughtfully and elegantly crafted, and is fulfilling and fun to wear and use.”

Because if you’re going to bite the bullet and launch yourself into space, you should do so looking as chic as possible. Watch the video below to hear more about the bold prototype designs.
