Just because she grew up in the public eye doesn’t mean Ireland Basinger Baldwin—the model daughter of Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin—is immune to the effects of fame. Yet the 17-year-old seems to be adjusting to her own time in the spotlight with the same poise she displays in front of the camera. Here, Baldwin—who posed for famed photographer Bruce Weber for DuJour’s winter issue—talks about her career, her family and what she wishes she knew before she stepped into the spotlight.
When did you decide you wanted to get into modeling?
About two years ago. I had to meet with many agencies before I found the right one for me.
Now that you’re working, is modeling what you thought it would be?
Modeling is much harder than I anticipated. It really takes a lot out of you. Though, it’s really fun and I never thought I would meet all these lovely people.
You’ve said that your end goal is movies. Why do you want to act? What would be your dream film?
My end goal is to act, write and direct. I’m interested in everything in front of and behind the camera. Acting has always been an interest of mine—I’ve been imitating people since I was a little girl. I grew up on my parents’ movie sets and so desperately wanted to be in their position. I would love to be in a comedy or remake of a classic novel.
Is there someone whose career you really admire?
I truly admire Chloë Moretz. I think she is brilliant and could kill any role. I also love Jack Nicholson. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Shining are two of my favorite films. He can do no wrong.

You mentioned on set that your mom showed you her own Bruce Weber pictures before this shoot. What did you think of them? How do you feel about getting to follow in those footsteps?
I am honored. Bruce was one of the nicest men I have ever met, and he was so professional. I loved working with him. The photos he shot of my mom were stunning. I would love to work with him again.
What did you enjoy most about working on this shoot?
I thought the theme was amazing. I loved seeing all the male models in kilts, and I loved dancing with the professional bagpipe players.
Now that you’re gaining impressive experience, is there any advice you wish someone had offered you when you were just beginning?
I wish I’d known to avoid Internet comments. It’s best just to ignore them and reject any negativity.
