Mariana van Zeller: “Kashmir was one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited. They are known actually not only for their incredible beauty but also for saffron.

Michael Voltaggio: “We were shopping for spices for dinner in that picture. That’s Kashmiri tea, which was very popular. Kashmir is a little country surrounded by China, Pakistan and India. I’d say the food and the culture is probably the most influenced by India just because there’s a huge Indian presence, but there is definitely a Kashmiri style.

Michael Voltaggio: “Those are green, Israeli almonds. On the show, I opened the almond and Mariana and I dipped them in salt and ate them right after that. Green almonds taste almost like a cucumber. They’re delicious.”

Mariana van Zeller: “This was our very first shoot of the series. We came straight out of the airport and this was our first scene. This is in old Jerusalem and since it was the first food scene we’d filmed for the show, we didn’t know what we were doing. After this, we walked around and filmed and went to holy sites. It was straight off the airplane and hit the ground running, and it was like that for the next year.”

Mariana van Zeller: “In the old part of the town, there was a saying here that if you drank this water it meant that you would have to return to Sarajevo. I don’t think I needed to drink this water to want to return, because it’s a beautiful city and I would very much like to go back.”

Michael Voltaggio: “You should caption it so she’s saying, ‘Oh, man, I am really hungover.’”

Mariana van Zeller: “This was our last shoot day of the whole series, and this photo is of our dinner in Cambodia. This is the end of the dinner, so we’re all sort of cheering but it had been an incredibly tense dinner. One of the gentleman at the table lost his father at about 12 years old. His father was taken away and killed by the Pol Pot regime. Another of the gentlemen worked very closely to Pol Pot and held some responsibility for what happened to the other gentleman’s father.”

Michael Voltaggio: “This looks like people are genuinely enjoying each other’s company, but 30 minutes prior he was crying. This picture means a lot to me just because somebody else looking at it will have a different perception than I do.”

Michael Voltaggio: “This is a tobacco curing room, where tobacco goes to dry. And these guys are tobacco farmers. They basically rolled cigars for us while we were standing in the curing room and they just dipped the ends in honey and we started smoking. I felt like such a Cuban, just such a boss.”

Mariana van Zeller: “We were horseback riding through the tobacco fields and then we got here to see the tobacco rolling operation. This gentleman in the photo is getting very friendly with his hands.”

Mariana van Zeller: “This is us hiking up to meet wild gorillas in Rwanda for the first time. When I say wild, we are not going to the zoo, we’re walking to the gorilla’s habitat. We walked for about two hours.”
Michael Voltaggio: “What’s interesting about this photo is that when we first arrived, we saw a bunch of people who had big boots on and I was making fun of them. And then we started climbing and there was mud up to my knees. Seconds after this picture, I stuck my foot—only in Converse sneakers—straight in mud up to my knees.”
