“This was one of the very first pictures I did at the beginning of this project,” Weisman says. “I can’t remember whose dress this was, but it’s a very old Oscars gown from someone like Greta Garbo. We tried different locations, but for me the bed makes the most sense. A lot of people wanted to try different things, but the photos in beds are the more intimate ones. This picture was very, very easy and quite cool to shoot.”

Scott Caan

“That’s Scott’s dog, but I forget its name.” Weismann says. “Scott had an operation on his knee, so he had this machine he would put his leg inside and it would move the leg very slowly. He had to lie on the floor for an hour or so, and I think it’s pretty easy to fall asleep that way. That’s what he explained to me, and I thought it would make a perfect picture. The dog just came walking into the shot.”

Lydia Hearst

“She wasn’t staying at the hotel, but she goes there quite often,” Weismann says of the model and heiress. “We met and went through different locations and ended up at this one. It’s very simple.” Hearst’s status as a Chateau habitué was enough to catch Weismann’s interest. “I’d say 80% of the people [I shot] were staying at the hotel, but the idea was to capture the people who go there,” he says. “It would make no sense to bring someone there who would never go.” “I just met the most amazing people, very friendly and interesting. Sometimes you think they’d be not interested in doing a project like this. I guess maybe I’m not used to very friendly people. It was very nice to see how helpful and interested in the project people were.”

Lapo Elkann

Some of Weismann’s photos weren’t staged as painstakingly as others. “This was a strange moment,” he says of his shoot with businessman (and Fiat heir) Elkann. “I was with my wife having lunch, and we spotted Lapo. I didn’t know him, but I knew who he was and I wanted him in the book. So I asked a waiter to give him a note asking him to come over and talk.” Elkann came to Weismann’s table and when he heard about the project, said he’d be glad to participate. Instead of scheduling a shoot, however, he decided to pose right that moment. “We were eating lunch on the patio of the restaurant when he took off his shirt and got on the floor in then middle of the restaurant,” Weismann says. “I took out my camera and took pictures. People were staring—and it’s not allowed to take pictures there—but the manager knew what we were up to, so it was OK.”

Keilana Smith

“I think she’s a very beautiful and photogenic woman,” Weismann says of the actress. The photo’s not stunning because of Smith alone, however. “In this specific picture, the light comes through the window in a really special way,” the photographer says. “We had no lighting or other equipment, just a camera. She was on the floor, but the idea for that came from the gorgeous light coming in through the window.”

Brendan Pollecutt

“Phil Pavel, the manager of the hotel, introduced me to Brendan,” Weismann says of the South African actor. “We took a few pictures and ended up using the one on the chair because the light was so interesting.” And as far as Pollecutt’s attire, Weismann says it was how Pollecutt felt most comfortable. “I asked people to pose in what they sleep in,” he says. “When he said he slept in only his underwear, I asked if he wouldn’t mind posing in that and he said, ‘Sure, no problem.’”

“This wasn’t planned,” Weismann says of his photo of the actress’ back—the only one in his book that doesn’t feature a face. “I would ask people how they sleep and very few of them wanted me to tell them what to do. She told me this is how she sleeps, but I still think it’s a beautiful picture; I like it that you can’t see her face—you can really enjoy the scenery.”

Kimberly Campbell

“This is one of my favorite pictures in the book,” Weismann says of his photo of Campbell, an actress. “I like it because it’s cinematic and weird that she’s just lying there. Also, you can see the room and get a sense of what her surroundings are like. It’s a bit like a film still.” Perhaps from a noir picture about a murder in a hotel? “Normally you don’t fall asleep on the floor,” Weismann concedes. “Sleeping and being dead are kind of close.”
