Sprawling over more than four acres in the heart of Mambal, Bali, the John Hardy Showroom and Workshop was built in 1997 and has since served as the brand’s design center and home.

The John Hardy Showroom and Workshop is made up of a series of low-impact structures that were created in the traditional Balinese style using bamboo and mud. The compound takes on a village-like setting, and is where John Hardy’s artisans and designers are able to collaborate on beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces.

The Kapal Bambu showroom was designed by Malaysian architect Cheong Yew Kuan and takes on the shape of a bamboo ship.

The building is made entirely of bamboo and is built on sticks so it has little impact on the earth. The showroom houses more than 10,000 pieces including special vintage collections—it also includes natural air-conditioning and an underground vault lined with beeswax.

Between each building, employees contribute to planting and harvesting on small fields of heirloom Bali rice and organic vegetables. Chicken, cows, goats, pigs and rabbits are also organically raised on the compound to help fertilize the gardens.
