"One of my favorite things to do when styling a clients' home is to use their own meaningful objects to accessorize with," says interior designer Michelle Gerson. "Lucky for me, Faith has so many amazing decorative pieces, like this sexy genie bottle and beautiful glass bud vase. I love to juxtapose ornate objects with modern spaces."

"Instead of a calling this the 'Formal Living Room,' we call this space the 'Adult Family Room,'" Gerson explains. "The room is set up with seating surrounding a custom-made sunken tray ottoman with a Lucite base—you can put your feet up and watch TV but also put your martini down...if you really want to!"

This room also serves as a gallery for part of Kates' extensive photography collection.

"In the kitchen, we tried to create a space where the family could all sit together and hang out, eat and do homework," says Gerson. "We achieved this by creating a custom banquet that feels like a sofa for the table, and we used one of Faith's collected photos from Bert Stern as a focal point above the banquet."

"The master bedroom needed to be a place where both Faith and Jeffrey felt at home," Gerson says. "We glamorized it for Faith by using an over-the-top custom sputnik by Jean De Merry and created drama with the high headboard and Lucite bench made from a luxurious cashmere from Ralph Lauren. For Jeffrey, we picked a masculine but very chic color palette of navy, black and cream and kept the look and feel of the furnishings very tailored."

"Faith's daughter was very involved in picking the decor for her own bedroom," says Gerson. "We collaborated and decided the room should be funky and cool—just like her. I mean, what's cooler than turquoise faux croc wallpaper and Missoni floral black-and-white-carpet all topped off with a custom silver-tufted princess bed?"

Designer Kenneth Cole asked Kates to recommend a photographer to shoot this high-profile 1985 campaign for AIDS research—the first of its kind—featuring, among others, Christie Brinkley, Beverly Johnson, Cindy Harrell, Andie MacDowell and some of their children. A print of the resulting photo, shot by Annie Leibovitz, hangs outside Kates’ master bedroom.

Reflecting on Faith's involvement with the visionary campaign, Gerson calls this contact the “epitome of Faith.”

Kates’ home is her own gallery. “When I come home, because [I have] a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week job, this is relaxing to me. It’s seeing these beautiful pictures,” she says.

And knowing the stories behind the photos, Gerson agrees. “That’s why they can’t sit in a storage room—that’s why they need to be hung.”
