Watch & Learn: Leonardo DiCaprio’s TAG Heuer

Here’s what you need to know about the Swiss brand’s Carrera 1887 Chronograph

Leonardo DiCaprio has walked a lot of red carpets for his Oscar-nominated performance in The Wolf of Wall Street, but one of his most eye-catching appearances was at January’s U.K. premiere in London. Looking every inch a country gentleman, he wore a glen check Armani suit with a classic TAG Heuer Carrera 1887 Chronograph.

The Carrera is Heuer’s signature watch. In fact, it is one of the most recognizable timepieces in the world of watches. First launched in 1963, it was designed for race car drivers and fans. Because drivers demanded a clean, easy-to-read dial, the Carrera is a rare tool watch that can adapt to more formal occasions (like a movie premiere).

The actor is one of TAG Heuer’s celebrity ambassadors, so it’s no surprise that he chose a Carrera. We do admire his choice: This refined chrono recalls the height of early 20th century elegance with its polished steel case, faceted rose gold-applied Arabic numerals and leather strap. But it also houses TAG Heuer’s caliber 1887 automatic movement with a 50-hour power reserve. Another nod to heritage, the movement is named for the year that Heuer invented its oscillating stopwatch pinion.

Like Leo and a finely tuned engine, this watch would set anybody’s heart racing!
