Watch & Learn: Solange Knowles’ Q&Q

Solange Knowles is not only a talented DJ and singer, she’s also one of the most influential street style icons. At the U.S. launch for the Japanese watchmaker Q&Q[1], Knowles was spinning reggae classics while decked out in a sunny white and yellow retro ’80s ensemble which she accessorized with a unisex SmileSolar timepiece. While we normally obsess about haute horology, most watch aficionados will admit a weakness for certain styles of pop watches, and the throwback vibe of the SmileSolar collection caught our eye.

The Q&Q SmileSolar

The Q&Q SmileSolar

For those of a certain age, the SmileSolar will recall the colorful plastic Swatch and Baby G watches of the 1980s and ’90s. But Q&Q’s fun and functional watches also look to the future—the 40mm resin cases and fabric straps are made from both virgin and recycled materials and feature a solar-powered system that keeps them powered for up to 3.5 months after a single charge. And Knowles is not the only celebrity fan; Katy Perry also wears a SmileSolar in her new “Birthday” video. The series is currently available for purchase at smile-qq.com[2].
