Patrick Dempsey may be known as Dr. Derek “McDreamy” on Grey’s Anatomy, but there’s nothing dreamy about competing with him on the racetrack. For over ten years the actor we’ve all swooned for in scrubs has been making a cutthroat name for himself behind the wheel. And now, fresh off of his fourth place finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race[1] last year, he’s making yet another gesture to his passion for sports car racing.
Later this month, Porsche Design and Dempsey Racing will be releasing a limited edition timepiece. Only 50 of the watches will be made, and they will be sold exclusively at the North American Porsche Design stores.
The result of the collaboration is a sleek and simple statement piece, indicative of Dempsey’s bare-bones outlook on the sport. “It’s about overcoming conflict,” he told DuJour at last year’s Le Mans race. “How do you individually handle adversity and come out the other side? It’s the great metaphor for what endurance racing is about—an attitude toward life that manifests on the racetrack. Life is about endurance.”
In line with this perspective, Dempsey expresses his rationale behind the collaboration. “It is Porsche’s DNA and who they are. To be a part of this is great because it elevates your game. You want to live up to the expectation and the level of professionalism and performance that Porsche demands.”
The watch is entirely titanium, with a matte black finish and a clear dial that maximizes readability of the key features needed in a high octane environment like the racetrack: time, date and stop time.
Remember, there are only a limited amount going into production—so if you want to snap one up, you’d better burn rubber.
