Tennis champ Novak Djokovic started 2015 with a big bang by winning the Australian Open (and earning his eighth Grand Slam title in the process). And he hopes to join another elite club this summer by becoming the eighth player to win all four of the game’s biggest tournaments with a win at the French Open.
We spotted Djokovic (seen here hoisting the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup in Melbourne) celebrating his most recent victory wearing his namesake Seiko Astron GPS Solar Novak Djokovic Limited Edition. It makes sense because there’s a lot of time and lot of miles between Melbourne and Paris, and the Astron GPS makes it easy to track the hours no matter where you are in the world.
One of Djokovic’s on-court talents is his outsized confidence. For world travelers, the Astron GPS Solar provides certainty because this rugged watch delivers accurate readings in 40 time zones (the best mechanical timepieces can only display 37) at the push of a button. It gets its information from GPS satellites (as opposed to an atomic clock), so if you can see the sky, you can automatically update anywhere—from the middle of a desert to the canyons of towers in midtown Manhattan. And because it’s powered by light, you don’t have to worry about battery drain.
The Astron GPS Solar Novak Djokovic Limited Edition also has the added functionality of Seiko’s new chronograph caliber, which debuted at Baselworld 2014. The high tech styling of the watch reflects its gadgety nature. The black and gold analog dial is easy-to-read thanks to its high-relief hour indicators’ raised hands. At 44.6 mm, the rose gold-coated stainless steel case is necessarily large in order to house the technology needed to manage the functions, but other materials such as a matte black ceramic bezel and silicone strap balance the bulk.
Fun fact: Seiko estimates that the Serbian superstar’s tour schedule requires him to adjust his watch at least 60 times a year. Basically, the Astron GPS Solar is built for frequent flyers like Djokovic.
