Watch & Learn: Freida Pinto’s Audemars Piguet

For dedicated followers of fashion, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala (AKA the Met Ball) has become as an important a photo opportunity as Cannes or the Academy Awards. It may be the most critical event of the year when New York’s most beautiful and stylish people are carefully vetted for invites. They then must also match their ensembles to the theme of the annual exhibit while outshining the rest of the star power on the red carpet.

It’s a tough tightrope to navigate. This year’s exhibition is called Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology and even though she stood out, perpetual fashion pet Sarah Jessica Parker took a hit for wearing a 17th century-inspired pant suit.

On the other hand, actor and activist Freida Pinto, dressed in a computerized, color changing Tory Burch gown, made high-tech look terrific. And we feel that kudos are due to her Audemars Piguet Diamond Punk timepiece[1].

Manus, or course, is Latin for hand and Machina is Machine. Pinto’s spiky cuff watch captures the spirit of the event perfectly. First of all, the 56 pyramid-shaped facets recall both the early engineering triumphs of the ancient Egyptians and the Cold War era disaffection of punk rock. At the same time, the Diamond Punk is a very human piece ofhaute joaillerie, crafted in 18k gold with onyx and 7,848 snow-set diamonds. According to Audemars Piguet, it takes team of watchmakers, jewelers and gem-setters 1,440 hours to create this timepiece.

As for standing out from the red carpet crowd, the edgy Diamond Punk is a true statement piece. Yet it is also elegant—especially when worn by Pinto who projects an Audrey Hepburn-esque cool-with-a-hidden-depth quality. Slide back the Diamond Punk’s secret cover and you’ll reveal the dial, which is set with a further 300 diamonds. And, of course, this time-only watch takes advantage of Audemars Piguet’s technological expertise with a tiny but super accurate quartz movement.

While Pinto’s look may have lacked the drama of Madonna’s Versace getup, it will certainly get her back on the guest list next year.
