The Roster: Your Fashion Month Preview

Jason Wu

The wunderkind designer officially took the reins as Artistic Director at BOSS womenswear[1] last summer, and this New York Fashion Week will set the stage for the revamped label’s runway show. Known for their sharply tailored menswear[2], the Hugo Boss brand has brought Wu on to refocus their women’s line, a duty in which he will no doubt excel. Get ready to see a whole lot more BOSS on Michelle Obama in 2014.

Uber

R.I.P. Lincoln Center. According to the top designers, Fashion Week’s main stage is on the outs[3]. This season in New York is all about expansive geography when it comes to runway venues, and more important than those Fendi monster bags will be the editors’ Uber app[4] on their iPhone. From the Navy Yard in Brooklyn—where Alexander Wang will show—to new venues in Chelsea and Tribeca for the likes of Michael Kors and Diane von Furstenberg[5], the on-demand car service is this fashion week’s most coveted accessory.

Louis Vuitton

It’s about to be a new dawn at Louis Vuitton during Paris Fashion Week, as Nicolas Ghesquiere will present his first collection[6] for the French house since succeeding Marc Jacobs as Creative Director. With all of the buzz built around it, this show will no doubt be one of the most exciting of the season. Will the set design be as theatrical as Marc’s once were? We don’t really expect rows of model-filled escalators, but with Ghesquiere’s organic talent, the clothes will be just as visually stimulating themselves.

Donna Karan

Since last year, DKNY has been making a commercial splash with their blowout fashion show in September featuring Rita Ora and last month’s commercials staring Cara Delevingne and A$AP Rocky. However this Fashion Week, the focus comes back to the designer[7] and her original eponymous label that officially turns thirty this year. Donna Karan New York will celebrate its milestone birthday with a blowout runway show and, we’re sure, a string of high-wattage events. With so many young men designing successful labels these days, it would behoove us all to take this season to honor one of the women who laid down the groundwork for all of them.

Bon Marché

During Paris Fashion Week, Proenza Schouler[8] will celebrate their collaboration with the French luxury department store. From February 22 through March 22, an exhibit that celebrates the design duo’s work will be on display, including clothing, video and installations that will live in Bone Marché’s[9] windows as well as on the store floors. In addition to seeing their breadth of work on display, shoppers will also be able to purchase limited edition capsule collection pieces made specifically by the designers for the occasion.

Kim Kardashian

Just like the recent noise on her supposed Vogue cover, we’re just speculating that Ms. Kim K[10] will be everywhere and anywhere this fashion month, continuing her efforts in letting the world know that she is serious about fashion[11]. Though she’s often a staple at the New York shows, she was spotted in some well-put-together ensembles just recently during Paris Couture. Has she decamped to the European runways? It certainly seems like that’s the way she’ll roll this season.

Nike

Givenchy’s Ricardo Tisci has teamed up with Nike[12] on a collaboration of sneakers[13] that will no doubt sell out in minutes once they drop on March 1. Smack in the middle of Paris Fashion week, the launch is this season’s coolest collaboration. For the tastemakers and editors who can get them a few days early, they will no doubt be the subject of every street style photographer’s lens.

Marni

It’s all about big business of the Italian house of Marni in 2014, as the company sets its sights on strengthening sales and increasing profits while focusing on more mass marketing of the family brand. The initiative kicks off with Marni’s runway show in Milan on Febraury 23, which will also celebrate the label’s 20th anniversary[14]. Always innovative in their designs, this is one comeback story ripe for fashion industry praise in the coming months.
