The Most Beautiful Thing in the World Today: Precious Objects

Dior’s Victoire de Castellane shows off another set of stunning stones, this time in New York

Victoire de Castellane knows her jewels. The Paris-based artist’s work features exquisite gems inspired by fairy tales, medieval history and, of course, jewelry. The latter should be no surprise considering de Castellane’s job as creative director of Dior’s jewelry line, but beginning this week her work will be seen in an entirely new light as Precious Objects, her first-ever New York exhibition, opens at Gagosian Gallery’s Madison Avenue location.

“My jewels are propositions. From the outset, this involves making an object that constructs itself out of many different things, and that sometimes ends up surpassing even what I had imagined for it,” de Castellane has said. “It is no longer primarily an accessory; it becomes something larger. It speaks about concept and form as opposed to objective value. It becomes sculpture.”

Here, DuJour has a look at five of the sparkling works that are included in de Castellane’s exhibition.
