Watch & Learn: David Beckham’s Breitling

Is it possible that soccer superstar David Beckham looks even dreamier as he gets older? How does he manage to sport a hipster beard and neck tattoos and not look like he’s having a midlife crisis? Perhaps one reason he can pull off this mix of bad boy and businessman is that he chooses his accessories well.

Take, for example, his watch. Beckham was in Beijing last month to launch the sporty Breitling  Chronomat Airborne, yet he wore a Transocean Chronograph Unitime[1] to the event. Design-wise, this timepiece—with its distinctive steel case featuring elegantly tapered lugs, a leather strap and striking black dial—recalls the classic look of 1950s and ‘60s chronographs. This alone lends it a certain grown-up gravitas.

Introduced in 2012, this chronograph is also an extremely practical watch for a frequent flyer like Beckham. It’s powered by Brietling’s in-house Caliber B05 self-winding movement, but what makes it truly cool is its world time function. One rotating disc allows you to automatically adjust the hands and other indicator adjusts the calendar. It also has a 24-hour disc that provides an at-a-glance look at all of the globe’s 24 time zones,

The Transocean (and his impeccably cut suit jacket) provides a thoughtful and mature anchor to Beckham’s more boyish sartorial choices. With this watch, anyone can find a stylistic balance between sporty and posh.
