Tying on Hirst and McQueen

Finally, some wearable art to tie on for the holidays. Just as the kaleidoscopic butterfly image has become synonymous with artist Damien Hirst, the skull scarf has become a signifier of the house of Alexander McQueen. Now, the two have joined forces to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the design house’s signature print. Out today, the collection of 30 scarves available in chiffon, pongé, twill and cashmere (from $515 – $1,175) pay homage to McQueen’s iconic skull image by recreating it through geometric shapes formed by Hirst’s Entomology series of insects, namely, the butterfly.

First seen on the spring 2003 runway at McQueen, the skull motif has become the most commercially successful iconography of the house, representing designer Lee McQueen’s fascination with gothic themes and the baroque look that influenced his designs and the designs of the label under Sarah Burton since McQueen’s death in 2010. Hirst, whose fashion collaboration cred includes his pill-studded backpacks for the Row last year, shares linear forms of expression with McQueen as both have incorporated these striking insect and skull imageries into their art and fashion. With references to the natural world and strikingly vibrant prints, this collaborative effort is one we didn’t know we needed—until now.
