Chris Evans’ IWC Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days

Captain America’s super Swiss watch

The cutest duo on the red carpet at the 88th Academy Awards had to be presenter Chris Evans and his sister Carly. Even for a fellow as handsome as Evans, it isn’t easy to stand out in a sea of men in tuxedos. But the siblings just looked so happy to be sharing a moment at the Oscars that we couldn’t help but feel excited for them.

We also got a little giddy about Evans’ watch—the International Watch Company’s Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days. Just as Evans is best known for taking on comic book characters such as Captain America and the Human Torch, the Eight Days harkens back to the original IWC Portugieser. But the thespian and the timepiece offer more than nostalgia.

Introduced in 2013, the Eight Days is a beautiful balance between a hand-wound and an automatic watch. For those who find winding a watch every day too troublesome, the 192-hour power reserve lets you coast for eight days without losing accuracy. At the same time, if you find wearing an automatic too much of a commitment because you like to switch up your watch wardrobe, you can also let your timepiece unwind for a while.

Another way in which the Eight Days makes life easier is the design. For purists, the railway-track chapter ring, arched-edge front glass, small seconds dial and feuille hands all trace their origins back to the Art Deco era. But as previously noted, the IWC-manufactured 59215 caliber supercharges the mechanism. To preserve the simple symmetry of the watch face, the power reserve display can be viewed through the clear sapphire case back.

The Eight Days’ manual movement also permits a more elegant profile—the 43mm case is only 12mm thick. For extra comfort, the straps have been fashioned by luxury shoemaker Santoni. Another great thing about the Eight Days is the collection’s range of materials and finishes. You can select from stainless steel or 18k red gold, different dial colors and, of course, styles of strap. For Oscars night, Evans opted for the luxurious look of the 18k red gold model with an Ardoise dial mounted on a black alligator.
