While the trend in timepiece sizes is moving away from hockey puck-level cases, big boys still need a big watch. That’s why former California governor and current action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger is a fan of the 53mm Classico by Italian watchmaker U-Boat.
U-Boat is a young company started by Italo Fontana in 2000. The core design of all his pieces come from an idea that his grandfather drew up in 1942. All U-Boat watches are big with a large crown system that is configured on the left side of the case to make the 45, 48 and 53mm timepieces surprisingly comfortable to wear. The Classico collection marked the company’s entry into high-end horology, tweaking the original design to add an engraved metal plate on the handmade leather strap and a see-through back to show off the modified Valjoux movements.

U Boat’s 53mm Classico
The most striking feature of the U-Boat Classico is the military-inspired dial. The design of the face is so clean, you could read the time on Schwarzenegger’s watch from across the Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes, where he was promoting his new movie, The Expendables 3. Again, scale is important when it comes to pulling off this look, but if you’ve got guns like the Governator, go for it!
