As NYC’s Metropolitan Museum of Art prepares to unveil PUNK: Chaos to Couture[1]—a multimedia exhibition celebrating the anti-establishment aesthetics of the punk movement and its lasting influence on fashion—Deborah Harry, the original punk-rock fashionista, shared some of her favorite looks with DuJour.
With her signature platinum fringe, darker than dark painted eyes and deconstructed thrift store finds, Harry was a trailblazer in DIY style while fronting Blondie and making history with fellow New York musicians like Joey Ramone, Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine. “We were all sort of rattling around in the same cage, so to speak,” says Harry of the style synergy of the ’70s, “and whether you want to call it genius or whether you want to call it complete raving lunacy, it was a spirit of adventure.”
PUNK: Chaos to Couture will be on exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 9 to August 11. Click through the gallery[2] to read Harry’s story behind her looks from the era.
