Room Request! Brazil’s Hotel Unique

There’s a lot going on at the 11-year-old, 95-room Hotel Unique[1] in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The six-story boat-shaped (some say it’s more like a watermelon) hotel designed by Oscar Niemeyer protégé Ruy Ohtake features not only some of the most stylish accommodations in the city but also a bustling rooftop pool bar (open to non-guests in the evening) and an entirely too relaxing outdoor rock garden.

But now in the thick of Sao Paulo Fashion Week[2], the property is even more the hotspot. Having previously played host to a number of events like Narcisso Rodriguez fragrance launches and Christian Dior trunk shows—when rooftop bar SKYE was bought out to accommodate a mini runway show—we know it has the pedigree; plus, with a staff decked out in creations by local designer Alexandre Herchcovitch, it’s hard to find a better-dressed hotel. General Manager Melissa Oliveira fills us in on which rooms get snatched up first when the glitterati descends on Sao Paulo.

Most requested room?
“Our Broadway Junior Suites are the most requested rooms in the hotel.”

What makes these rooms special?
“The integration between the bedroom and the living room, the curving walls and the views over Ibirapuera Park.”

What’s your personal favorite?
“The Junior Suites, too, for the same reasons mentioned above, and the Paulista rooms.”

Because…
“Our Paulista rooms are large and reflect the curve of the building with floors that gently slope into the walls.”

Celebrity guests:
“Steve Tyler, Michael Bublé, Kevin Costner and Harrison Ford as well as fashion industry notables like Suzy Menkes, Carolina Herrera and Christian Louboutin.”

What about during Fashion Week?
“The hotel is absolutely full with guests from the fashion industry during this time. We host some of the shows for Fashion Week; we are also the official venue of the fashion trade show Casamoda and for the F*hitz event for fashion bloggers.”

Rates:
Starting from $650 per night

Fun fact:
“Our rooftop restaurant and bar SKYE is actually named after singer Skye Edwards of the British band Morcheeba (the owner of the hotel is a huge fan). Skye Edwards actually stayed at the hotel last year and was very pleasantly surprised to learn the restaurant/bar was named after her.”
