Room Request! MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa

Located just a few blocks from downtown Sonoma, MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa[1] likens to a tiny, charming village within this wine country town. The newly minted modern lobby has a streamlined, minimalistic feel with warm rustic accents that make the space cozy and inviting. On arrival, you’re greeted with Just Water, a boxed substitute to bottled water, which is just one of the many ways the property strives for sustainability.

Stone paths lead you to your cottage where your luggage is already waiting for you. The rooms are wrapped in a neutral, calming color palette that almost makes you never want to leave. Thoughtful accents like radiant floors, outdoor showers, complimentary healthy snacks, and Grown Alchemist [2]amenities give MacArthur Place a home away from home (but better!) feeling as you settle into your stay. The plush slippers, a plush robe, and a wood-burning fireplace will call to you after a long day of wine tasting in Sonoma.

Bohemian Highway[3], a partner of MacArthur Place, is the perfect avenue to exploring Sonoma’s many wine purveyors. Prepare for exclusive tasting experiences, chef curated picnics, and transportation in a vintage Land Rover. These tours are not your run-of-the-mill tastings–they are fully immersive, palate bending experiences. If you aren’t feeling a full day at the vineyards, indulge in one MacArthur Place’s signature spa treatments like the Wildflower Field of Dreams body scrub and massage featuring products made from local ingredients. For dinner, check out the on-property restaurant Layla for a light meal paired with beautiful local wines.

Below, General Manager, Ruben Cambero walks us through his favorite pieces of this reimagined property.

What’s the most requested room?

The Julia Suite, guestroom #10.

What makes it so special?

This luxurious studio-style suite is the original master bedroom within the historic Burris House – the stately Victorian-era family residence of the property’s original owners. Steeped in history and farmhouse charm, but recently remodeled with modern finishes, rich textures, lavish amenities and sweeping garden views, this premium suite is as decadently luxurious as it is cozy and comfortable. The suite, named after Julia Burris (wife of estate founder, David Burris), has a king bed, roomy sitting area, gas log fireplace and a large private balcony overlooking the lush grounds and bamboo grove. La piece de resistance? A grand soaking tub in the spacious bathroom, perfect for a relaxing spa-like experience.

What room is your personal favorite?

I love each one of our 64 rooms for a different reason, but I’d have to pick Chef’s Cottage (#12) as my personal favorite. This stand-alone cottage truly celebrates outdoor living, which is quintessential to Sonoma – and to Spain, where I am from. Not only does this guestroom have an indoor shower that seamlessly transitions to an outdoor shower, but it also has a large private flagstone patio with a fire pit and chef’s table for dining and entertaining al fresco under the starry Sonoma sky. Hire our executive chef to cater a private, family-style meal or tap into our property’s text messaging service to request a Moscow Mule[4], bar snacks and a warm blanket while you stargaze by the fire pit and dream up the next day’s adventure.

Any fun facts about the hotel or rooms?

We have a large, and continually growing, collection of unique artworks (over 100) which are displayed in the guestrooms, as well as the public spaces and gardens. These paintings, photographs, sculptures and textiles add a pop of color or a playful wink to complement the serene textures and natural color palette of the hotel’s design. As part of our artist in residence program, we were honored to host acclaimed Bay Area woodworker, Aleksandra Zee, on property in January 2020 to create and install a custom geometric lattice work on the ceiling alcove outside our restaurant, Layla. This beautiful and impressive piece will be on permanent display at MacArthur Place.
