Drink DuJour: The State Fair

The Up & Up is the ringleader of festive cocktails

The Up & Up—a Greenwich Village bar whose address was once frequented by Beat legends—is staying true to their motto of creating high-end drinks in a low-key setting. Case in point: The State Fair cocktail, inspired by the pepper-seasoned popcorn served at the North Carolina State Fair.

“The cocktail is an old fashioned variation incorporating tequila, corn and black pepper,” says mixologist James Palumbo. “It’s shaken with an orange twist for just a hint of that orange creamsicle.”

Here’s what you’ll need to make it.

THE STATE FAIR

2 oz. Suerte Reposado Tequila
½ oz. Old Tom Gin
¼ oz. Amontillado sherry
¾ oz. Corn syrup

Combine in a tin and shake with an orange twist. Garnish with black pepper and an orange twist.
