Room Request! The Surrey Hotel

Explore the most coveted room at this classic-meets-contemporary New York City property

What constitutes a quintessentially Upper East Side hotel? One that boasts a Chanel-inspired bar, of course. At The Surrey in New York City, the quilted leather walls inside Bar Pleiades (a nod to the classic Chanel handbag) are just one indicator of the hotel’s chic uptown aesthetic. The rooms are another. After a $60 million renovation in 2009, The Surrey transformed into a decidedly modern property housed in a historic Madison Avenue building. Guests have the choice of 189 rooms, but which do they most often request? The Surrey’s Maître de Maison Shan Kanagasingham provides the answer below.

Most requested room in the hotel:
“The Penthouse Suite.”

What makes it special:
“The loft-like 1,200-square-foot Penthouse has 10-foot ceilings, a fireplace, formal living and dining rooms, a retractable projection screen, oversized bedroom and a bathroom with a sleek soaking tub and rain shower. An eclectic assortment of artwork by Ann Hamilton, Jonathan Borofsky, Nathalia Edenmont, Mel Bochner and Donald Baechler add a touch of humor and inspiration to the space. The room offers direct access to The Surrey’s English Rooftop Garden, a private wraparound terrace with couches and a dining table that seats nine. The suite is ideal for entertaining, featuring stunning views of Central Park and the Upper East Side.”

Your personal favorite:
“The Presidential Suite.”

Because…
“The Presidential Suite offers beautiful views of Central Park and features a baby grand piano, sauna and private patio. The suite also occupies original artwork including a chaise lounge painted by Jimmie Martin with the recipe for a Manhattan cocktail.”

The rate:
“The Penthouse suite’s rate starts at $7,000 per night.”

Fun fact:
“The Surrey offers guests an impressive collection of original artwork including a Kate Moss tapestry by Chuck Close. It’s the only Relais & Chateaux hotel in New York City.”
