Aveda Pomelo Lip Shine

It’s my tradition: I switch from lipstick to lip gloss as spring turns to summer. For years I’ve sworn by Aveda’s Lip Shines—they never turn goopy on you while giving a hint of color. The texture is just right. With all lip colors, I work the various russet shades that flatter women with pale skin and auburn hair. My favorite for the last two summers was, believe it or not, the shade Beet Root. That doesn’t sound too exquisite, does it? But it’s been a good color for me, with its subtle yet rich sheen. This season, I decided to give Pomelo a shot, even though it’s a brighter red than Beet Root. I’m out of my comfort zone, and so far, so good.

The Book of Life, by Deborah Harkness

I am a lucky woman—Viking Books sent me an advance copy of The Book of Life[3], the third novel in Deborah Harkness’s All Souls Trilogy. I met Deborah at a Viking editors’ lunch for her first book, A Discovery of Witches[4], which rocketed onto the bestseller lists. Deborah and I hit it off over our shared love of English history and suspense fiction. She was very supportive of my first novel, The Crown[5], which is about a young nun on a mystical quest in Tudor England. Deborah is a professor of history at University of Southern California and so she draws on her extensive knowledge—and literary chops—to create her own enthralling novels. A witch/scholar named Diana Bishop and a vampire/scientist named Matthew Clairmont fall in love and travel through time, all the while facing danger and chasing after the enchanted book Ashmole 782. I will be interviewing Deborah about her third book, which answers all the tantalizing questions posed in the series, and posting the story on Dujour.com in mid-July. But don’t come to me for spoilers in the meantime. I’m sworn to secrecy!

The Standard’s Mojito Cocktail

Along with lip gloss, the first burst of hot weather means Mojitos. The drink’s best feature—or the most dangerous, depending on how you look at it—is taste. A Mojito, to me, is more delicious than a Margarita and more elegant than a Daiquiri. It’s that potent blend of lime, sugar cane, mint leaves and rum. Very Cuban. A proper Mojito requires a proper setting, and I think The Standard Hotel on the High Line offers the best rooftop bar in New York City. Watching the sun set over the Hudson River while sipping this drink—amazing.
