Room Request! Eden Rock St. Barths

There’s certainly no shortage of luxury accommodations on the island of St. Barth[1]. Palatial villas are plentiful, and five-star hotels are considered the standard—which makes it difficult for any one property to truly stand out. But that’s never been a problem for Eden Rock St. Barths[2]. Situated on St. Jean Bay, the hotel has become something of a St. Barth landmark since it opened in the 1950s. Through the years, Eden Rock has hosted everyone from Greta Garbo and Howard Hughes to notable families like the Rockefellers and Middletons[3].

For A-listers, the draw of the hotel isn’t just an amazing beach and location—it’s the fact that you can choose to “see and be seen” or enjoy complete seclusion. With just 34 rooms, staff members take pride in getting to know each guest on a personal level. It’s not unusual, for instance, to have your waitress at breakfast make note of your preferred green juice[4], and have it waiting at the table when you arrive each morning. But chances are, you’ll lean toward the more indulgent items on the menu, like made-to-order crepes or Nutella-stuffed donuts. And that’s just breakfast. For dinner, the hotel’s On the Rocks restaurant has Chef Jean-Georges at the helm, and one of the most romantic views on the island.

The rooms are equally as impressive. Each has its own unique personality, ranging from the “Howard Hughes” aviation-themed suite to the famed Villa Rockstar, which boasts a fully equipped recording studio. (Kenny Chesney has recorded there, among other musicians.) Which room is considered the most desirable? We turned to General Manager Fabrice Moizan for the answer.

The most requested room:
Various rooms are in the ‘most requested category’ and the Diamond Suite James is definitely amongst the most sought-after.

What makes it so special:
Named after the owner’s eldest son, James Matthews, this diamond-shaped, generously spacious suite sits at the foot of the rock right on the water’s edge. Its sumptuously large bathroom with sunken bath and double cascade shower adjoins a cool designer bedroom with handcrafted furniture. Great ocean views roll out beyond the private pool, deck and Jacuzzi. You can invite friends for dinner in the large living room, enjoy the pool or the Jacuzzi or dip into the turquoise blue sea just a couple of steps away via a private beach access.  The James Suite is undeniably one of the greatest spots in French West Indies.

Because…
The Howard Hughes Loft offers one of the most spellbinding views of the St Jean Bay, which can be enjoyed from any of its three terraces. The bespoke design of the loft pays tribute to aviator Howard Hughes who was a regular guest during the 1960s during the heyday of the Hollywood era.  To me, this suite perfectly reflects the character and history of Eden Rock St Barths as being unique, discreetly glamorous and blessed with a spirit of adventure.

Fun facts:
Ours is the first hotel constructed on the island in the fifties by celebrated local aviator Rémy de Haenen, who entertained colorful Hollywood personalities at his ‘inn’ as personal friends & guests. Our ultraluxe Villa Rockstar has a professional music-recording studio located in the basement and state-of-the-art equipment, including the original Neve console on which John Lennon recorded his ‘Imagine’ song. Our guests—most notably country singer Kenny Chesney—can professionally record their own studio tracks in the Rockstar.
