Drink DuJour: Spicy Fifty

A bold brew that packs a serious punch

With a resume that boasts experience in crafting libations for presidents and royalty, as well as a 2012 Guinness World Record for the planet’s most expensive cocktail, it’s no surprise that beverage maestro Salvatore Calabrese has a legacy similar to that of his creative brews: classic and spirited. This particular blend, a favorite from Calabrese’s former bar FIFTY in London, offers a sweet and spicy kick that pairs perfectly with Asian fusion cuisine.

“Heat is a sensation and is very difficult to hide,” says Calabrese. “This drink is so well constructed that it gives sweetness at the beginning followed by the citrus notes and finally a hint of chili creeps in at the end to give a unique finish.”

Spicy Fifty is being served up at the plush lounge Bound by Salvatore inside The Cromwell hotel in Las Vegas. If you’d like to give it a try at home, we’ve snagged the recipe below.

SPICY FIFTY

1.7oz Stoli Vanilla Vodka
0.5oz Elderflower cordial
0.5oz fresh lime juice
0.3oz Monin honey syrup
2 thin slices red chili pepper

Place all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake sharply and double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a red eye chili sitting on the edge of the glass.
