The Singapore Sling cocktail is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Invented in 1915 by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon at the landmark Raffles Hotel Long Bar, the iconic brew comes with a storied past.
Hotel lore has it that a well-to-do lady was the inspiration behind the drink. At the time of its conception, it was frowned upon for women to consume alcohol in public, and this particular woman wanted a beverage that would conceal her imbibing from her husband. So, the fruity, punch-like Singapore Sling was invented.
Ready to give it a try? Here’s what you’ll need.
1 oz. Gin
½ oz. Heering Cherry Liqueur
4 oz. Pineapple juice
½ oz. Lime juice
¼ oz. Cointreau
¼ oz. Dom Benedictine
1/3 oz. Grenadine
Dash of Angostura bitters
Pineapple slice & cherry garnish
Pour all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a highball glass. Garnish with a pineapple slice and cocktail cherry.
