The Cala di Volpe, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Costa Smeralda[1], is a stunning resort in Porto Cervo, nestled between the windswept hills and lush coast of Italy’s Sardinia[2]. It isn’t easy to get to. There are several flights involved, and then a long drive up winding roads. But the payoff is immediate: in the sapphire ocean waters, in the endless blue skies and the bright sun that makes everything languid and easy.
The luxury property is one of the premier destinations on the Costa Esmeralda, where the austere décor and exquisite service draws celebrities from around the world. It’s not unusual to look up to see a global pop star heading from the lobby to the dock or to find yourself seated next to an award-winning European singer while sipping an Aperol Spritz at the elegant bar.
The hotel has photo-ready views at every corner but the private beach, a short walk or an even shorter boat ride away, transports guests to their own secluded beach hideaway, where the only sounds are the surf and the occasional yacht drifting by.
Should you find yourself at the Cala di Volpe, make sure to spend time lingering over the luxury stores in Porto Cervo, where the locals pick up baubles at Versace[3] and Gucci, and also book a car to San Pantaleo, an artist’s village on the other side of the island where you can pick up original, handmade clothes and art.
Below, Giulia Mundula, marketing director at Costa Smeralda, describes her favorite details at the luxe Cala di Volpe.
What’s the most requested room?
At the Hotel Cala di Volpe, each room type differs in its unique décor, furniture, and color scheme. Our repeat guests generally have their own favorite room, which they tend to request year after year, traditionally in a room that evokes a special memory or other preferences. For this reason there is not a most specifically requested room, as it is a very personal matter that works on an emotional level. The room category that is the most requested is the Premium room, however. We find that our guests tend to go with their own personal favorites more so than a certain room configuration.
What makes it so special?
The Hotel Cala di Volpe is the quintessence of the unique magic that has made Costa Smeralda the most glamorous natural playground in the Mediterranean. The preferred sea views are the major feature that differentiate rooms within the Premium room category. Our Premium rooms offer unsurpassed views of the emerald green Cala di Volpe Bay and the turquoise sea beyond from spacious private balconies or patios.
Furnished with rustic table and chairs typical of the region, these alluring perches inspire treasured memories. Indoors, each room is distinguished by its own pastel color scheme, ranging from powdery pinks and aqua blues to soft reds and golden yellows. This emblematic thread is repeated in the brilliant ceramic tile floor and charming array of Sardinian furniture, which is handcrafted and embellished by local artisans. Additionally, distinctive white walls feature the French trompe l’oeil painting technique, creating a charming optical illusion of three-dimensional objects and scenes that celebrate domestic life and homegrown folklore heroes.
What is the rate?
The rate for peak season is €3,090 per room per night, breakfast and VAT included.
What room is your personal favorite?
My personal favorite is the Presidential Suite at the Cala di Volpe since the minimalist décor and decorated by handcrafted Sardinian furnishings beautifully compliment the cleverly arranged local artwork and brings in the colors of the coastline, which can be see from the rooftop balcony.
The lavish layout includes three bedrooms, three bathrooms with Jacuzzi, two living rooms, a solarium and a large terrace, a fitness area and the ultimate indulgence of a private swimming-pool. As seen in the overall aesthetic of the Cala di Volpe, the arched window frames and the ceramic tiled floors reflect the traditional style of architecture showcased throughout Porto Cervo.
Any fun facts about the hotel or rooms?
The Cala di Volpe’s reputation has transcended legend, becoming the scenery for exceptional experiences. Notably the property has served as the set of famous movies such as the “007 The Spy Who Loved Me,” couture fashion shows for brands like Dolce & Gabbana, society weddings, intimate celebrity concerts. The Presidential Suite is one of the most expensive in all of Europe, with starting rates beginning at €18,000.
