The secluded Nizuc Resort and Spa[1] is a pristine property on Cancun’s Punta Nizuc, formerly a private retreat for the president of Mexico. Conceived by interior and architectural designer Alejandro Escudero, the massive 29-acre, 274-room resort boasts two private beaches, six first-rate restaurants and countless open spaces to take in breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea.
A palm-thatched swim-up bar at the main pool is a smart idea, as is the adult-only pool and beach areas for those traveling without kids (but good news for those with children in tow: The resort’s kids club offers activities like cooking classes and ceramic painting). Nizuc is also home to a 30,000-square foot ESPA spa that integrates advanced European techniques with ancient Mayan healing rituals. Beyond the resort, guests take their paddle boards and kayaks and explore Nizuc’s protected mangroves, exotic wildlife and the white sands of the second largest coral reef in the world.
Back inside, a day of exploring ends in Bali-inspired suites with bathrooms equipped with rain showers and soaking tubs. And, of course, many of the rooms offer private outdoor terraces and plunge pools with sweeping views of the ocean. Below, Nizuc’s general manager Louis Daniel tells us about the most sought-after room on the property.
The most in demand rooms in the hotel:
“The Ocean Suites.”
What makes it special:
“They are located just off the main lobby offering guests easy access to the heart and soul of the resort with its multiple dining establishments, pools and breathtaking views of Punta Nizuc. The suites offer both incredible sunrises and sunsets.”
Celebrity guests:
Several star athletes including NBA center/power forward for the Atlanta Hawks Al Horford and former Miss Universe Amelia Vega (spotted on this journalist’s recent visit).
Rate per night:
$750
Your personal favorite:
“The Master Suites.”
Because…
“They were originally designed to be residential homes. Asian architectural forms fuse with Mexican materials and Mayan iconography to create intimate atmospheres amongst expansive spaces. Classic furniture with chic touches add to twenty-first century design. The suite typifies East meets West and Cool meets Warm in architecture and design.”
Fun fact:
“To instill the resort with Mexican spirit, [designer] Alejandro Escudero worked closely with the Museo Nacional de Antropología to replicate Mayan hieroglyphs; he incorporated 17th-century stone door-frames and a mural inspired by a 16th-century fresco from the Convento Agustino in the city of Malinalco.”
