Room Request! Scrub Island Resort and Marina

With well-appointed villas and a mega yacht-filled marina, you’d never guess that Scrub Island—located in the northeast corner of the British Virgin Islands—was a piece of land first discovered by Christopher Columbus in the 1500s. Now, 500 years later, the 230-acre oasis is home to Scrub Island Resort Marina[1].

While much of the island remains uninhabited, the resort encompasses 60 suites and villas, restaurants, a spa, a dive shop and a marina that is equipped to dock up to 55 boats, including five mega yachts. To find out more about Scrub Island’s rich history and the most requested room on the property, we turned to general manager Binny Sebastian.

“The Presidential Suite has three separate balconies plus a spiral staircase up to a crow’s nest, which is the highest point of the resort. From there guests overlook five islands: Tortola, Guana, Grand Camanoe, Beef Island and Marina Cay. It’s the best place on the island for a sunset. Guests have hosted private parties on the rooftop deck and had a private chef cook and serve dinner for two under the stars. The view incorporates both the ocean and the marina. The gourmet kitchen includes Subzero fridge, Viking stove, Nespresso coffee machine[2], washer/dryer and powder room.”

“Down a stone path covered by natural BVI shrubbery, guests have access to a private wooden deck directly on the Caribbean Sea overlooking Great Camanoe, as well as the protected waters of Cam Bay National Park. The Beach House also has the only land access to Honeymoon Beach. It truly feels like you are on your own private island. The villa has two bedrooms with private baths, a plunge pool, outdoor shower.”

“The resort is named after its location on Scrub Island, a serene 230-acre haven situated one mile from the east end of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Scrub Island was first discovered by Christopher Columbus nearly 500 years ago while serving as a stopping point for European explorers en route to new lands. Legend has it that its name came from pirates who dropped anchor in the area to ‘scrub’ barnacles off of their boats. The island remained relatively untouched for centuries. Also, during excavation, the builders discovered a foundation from the 1600-1700s with artifacts, glasses, jars, cutlery, etc. You can still walk to see the foundation on the top of the island.”
