A classic dessert[1] just got a very luxurious upgrade. Executive chef Björn De La Cruz of Williamsburg’s Manila Social Club[2] uses some of the finest ingredients to create the Golden Cristal Ube Donut. Making this sweet treat is no easy task, which is why they’ll run you $100 a piece or $1,000 a dozen and must be pre-ordered. Based on the number of orders received each Thursday night, De La Cruz makes each pastry by hand early Friday morning.
Post-frying, the donuts get filled with a one-of-a-kind mix of purple ube mousse and Cristal Champagne jelly. To finish it off, De La Cruz coats each donut with 24-karat gold, Cristal Champagne icing and intricate 24-karat gold leafing and dust. And contrary to popular belief, the high price tag comes from the Cristal, not the gold.
