Steps away from the famed Portobello Road and just around the corner from Kensington palace, on a gorgeously unassuming tree-lined street, five row homes have been lovingly and masterfully restored into our new favorite London hotel, The Laslett[1].
Opened in late summer 2015, under the watchful eye of architect Tom Bartlett of Waldo works, the hotel draws on the rich heritage of its Notting Hill roots. With its elegant fixtures and furniture and art from local artisans, guests feel as if they’re cozily settled into a home away from home.
We sat down with owner Tracy Lowy over a glass of wine to find out more.
The most requested room:
The Master Bedroom Suites, we have eight in total.
What makes it so special:
They feel very spacious with high ceilings and French windows, there’s also curated artworks from local British artists, vintage curiosities, British design pieces from Pinch and Race furniture.
The rate:
Rates for the suites would typically be from $340 winter, and from $550 in summer.
Your personal favorite:
Room 19, a Master Bedroom Suite.
Because…
It has a huge freestanding bathtub and the Victorian perch swimming in volcanic rock! A 3D composition by Jerome Dodd. Jerome is an antiques specialist and acclaimed interiors consultant for clients such as LVMH, Roland Mouret and Anya Hindmarch. Paris-born Dodd is also a curator, collector and collaborator for The Laslett.
Fun facts:
During our refurbishment of the Victorian townhouses that were to become The Laslett, we lifted the floorboards to find a very worn pair of woman’s shoes. A little research told us that it was fairly common to hide a pair of shoes in the walls or under the floorboards in the hope of bringing good fortune to the household. They’ve been hidden in 8 Pembridge Gardens for over a century, so we’ve decided to keep them here, inside a display box in the wall of the entrance, in the hope that they will continue to bring luck to this place and to all who visit.
