Big hats and bourbon cocktails have been Kentucky Derby staples for nearly a century; and while the Mint Julep rules as the event’s official drink, we’ve snagged the recipe for a bold twist that is sure to please the palates of race day partygoers this weekend.
“The Thoroughbred is a concept created from my Southern and Caribbean roots,” said Charles Washington, bar manager at LOCL Bar in New York’s NYLO Hotel. “It’s a cross between a refreshing Mojito, a crisp Moscow Mule and a classic bourbon drink like the Mint Julep. Shake it to perfection and let the good times roll!”
Here’s how it’s done:
THE THOROUGHBRED
1 ½ oz. Jefferson’s Classic Bourbon
4 Sprigs mint leaves
2 Powdered sugar cubes
2 Lime wedges
In a glass, combine sugar cubes, mint leaves and lime wedges and muddle until sugar is crushed but not dissolved. Add bourbon and shake for 30 seconds. Garnish with a mint leaf.
