Every city dweller needs a country escape: somewhere to see the sparkle of actual stars and not hear the rumble of the subway every three and a half minutes. For New Yorkers, that should be Hasbrouck House[1] in Stone Ridge, about two hours north of the city.
Formerly the Inn at Stone Ridge, Hasbrouck House officially re-opens under new management Labor Day weekend 2016. The expansive property centers on an 18th century Dutch Colonial stone mansion with seventeen suites in the main house, and nearby carriage and stable houses.
The historic charm is coupled with well-curated design. Think: oversized leather chairs, Frette linens and gold finishes. Ideal for weekenders, it’s the kind of place you can lounge by the pool, hike down to the nearby apple orchard or have a cocktail at the marble-topped bar. Hasbrouck House also offers in-house, upscale dining at their restaurant, Butterfield. Executive Chef Shawn Burnette is serving up a menu that constantly changes and evolves based on what ingredients are available. Burnette’s goal is to source all ingredients from within 20 miles of the property.
We talked with the owner and designer of the property, Akiva Reich, about the upcoming opening and the inn’s best features.
The (soon-to-be) most requested room:
The Grand Suite is the entire top floor of the Carriage House. It is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom with a full day bed in the TV room, a large living space and private balcony. It’s the perfect accommodation for a stay with friends or family.
What makes it so special:
The size of it! Also, it has a private entrance and the balcony overlooks our landmark swimming pool.
The rate:
$675 per night. It sleeps up to 6 people.
Your personal favorite:
Room #9.
Because…
What’s interesting is some of the rooms that were the most challenging to design in terms of space ended up being very charming. Room #9 is in front corner of the third floor with a pitched ceiling. It’s small but still has a queen bed and feels like a sweet little room in Paris.
Fun fact:
The main dining room of our restaurant Butterfield is the original house built by the Hasbrouck family in 1757. It’s older than the United States of America.
