A Snack with An Unusual Purpose

Most pregnant women can attest that swallowing a large prenatal vitamin pill each day can be difficult to bear. Knowing how important their nutrients are, Erica Huss and Zoë Sakoutis set out to conceive a solution for mothers-to-be.

“We got to thinking,” Huss told DuJour. “Instead of choking down a pill and then chasing it with a little snack to make sure you keep it down, why can’t the vitamin itself just be in the snack?”

So, the duo founded ERZO Vitamin Biscuits[1]. Offered in four delicious flavors—oat (a gluten-free option is available), apple cinnamon, strawberry Greek yogurt, and ginger—the biscuits are easy to eat and, best of all, supply a complete daily dose of prenatal nutrition.

Here, the cofounders dish about this exciting new category.

Did you play around with any other ideas or was it always a biscuit?

Typically when people take vitamins[2], they take them in the morning so we wanted to create a product that you’ll think of first thing upon waking, although you can eat this biscuit however and whenever you want. You can have it at night with tea, crumble it into yogurt or drizzle a little bit of honey or almond butter on it. There’s a ton of versatility and it’s a pretty substantial snack.

What are they made of?

They’re 100% whole grain, have a little honey, stevia and that’s pretty much the bulk of it. It’s non-GMO and less than 200 calories for three biscuits. They’re meant to be very neutral tasting and palatable for everyone.

Tell me about your charitable partnership with Vitamin Angels[3].

If you buy a box of the biscuits, a five-day supply, we’ll donate an equivalent dose of prenatal vitamins to a woman in need. We’re really passionate about this piece of it because this is definitely not just a First World issue and goal to have healthy babies becoming healthy adults. It’s really important to raise awareness on a global level.
