The DuJour 5×5: Oscars Edition

DuJour editors dish about Ellen as host, Whoopi’s interesting ensemble and the speeches that stole the show

Each week for The DuJour 5×5, we ask five editors five questions on a different topic. This week’s installment centers on all things Academy Awards: our picks for best and worst dressed, the highlights of the evening and our favorite social media reactions to the ceremony.

1. Ellen DeGeneres was a deliciously wicked host. She stole the show; I nearly cried with laughter. I’d love to see her do it again next year.

2. My favorite line from an acceptance speech: Alright, alright, alright. The McConaissance is complete.

3. My pick for best dressed and worst dressed attendee: Best dressed: Angelina Jolie. Not because I loved her dress, but because she was a bit covered up. She shed the provocative seductress act for classic glamour and radiated. Worst: Bono’s high-heeled booties.

4. The highlight of the evening for me: Lupita‘s win, and all the wins for 12 Years a Slave.

5. Standout social media reaction to the ceremony: @TheEllenShow #blessed

1.  Ellen DeGeneres was fine as host. I’d love to see Jenny Slate do it next year.

2. My favorite line from an acceptance speech: Not a line, but watching Steve McQueen jump up and down after 12 Years A Slave won was heartwarming and unexpected.

3. My pick for best dressed and worst dressed attendee: I thought Ewan McGregor and Kerry Washington both looked great. It was a shame the brilliant Whoopi Goldberg didn’t get better style advice.

4. The highlight of the evening for me: Karen O and Ezra from Vampire Weekend’s song was a gorgeous moment to remember that not everything we love about movies is totally over the top.

5. Standout social media reaction to the ceremony: The fake Adele Dazim Twitter accounts that popped up were my unexpected favorites of the night.

1. Ellen DeGeneres was exactly what I expected as host. I’d love to see Jarvis from @SheHasHadIt do it next year.

2. My favorite line from an acceptance speech: “And this for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS and to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love, tonight I stand here in front of the world with you and for you.” Jared Leto

3. Most pick for best dressed and worst dressed attendee:  Best Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive and Kevin Spacey in Burberry. Worst Whoopi Goldberg

4.The highlight of the evening for me: I found Matthew McConaughey’s hero search bit quite…inspiring?

5. Standout social media reaction to the ceremony: I was still at dinner for the beginning of the ceremony and the woman at the table next to me kept reading of-the-minute updates from her twitter feed out loud to what seemed like the whole restaurant.

1. Ellen DeGeneres was underwhelming as host. I’d love to see Jimmy Fallon do it next year.

2. My favorite line from an acceptance speech: “I just want to say ‘I love you mom, thank you for teaching me to dream’… To all the dreamers out there around the world watching this tonight in places like Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to say we are here, and as you struggle to make your dreams happen and live the impossible, we are thinking of you tonight.” – Jared Leto

3. My pick for best dressed and worst dressed attendee: Best was Naomi Watts in Calvin Klein Collection and Charlize Theron in Dior; worst was Penelope Cruz and Whoopi.

4. The highlight of the evening for me: Jared Leto epitomized what a perfect Oscars acceptance speech should sound be: Gracious, touching and overwhelmingly sincere. He was a class act.

5. Standout social media reaction to the ceremony: DiGiorno capitalized on the pizza delivery in the best way possible.
